direct capture to final cut

I've tried every possible menu option and firewire setting or so it seems. Has anyone done a capture now straight from the camera to FCP 5.04 with a G5. I set the camera as a 1394 device, shooting 720p24p-open final cut and set my capture settings to 720p24p. FCP can not initialize deck. What am I doing wrong.

BTW, This camera makes some beatiful Images. Factory settings are a little noisy but with some tweaking, WOW!!!!!!!!

Set HVX to 1394 device and then do Import -> Panasonic P2. I did this once on a demo and it worked. I confess not only to not owning an HVX but also not even being on a list pending working out financing and business plan to make it pay ;)

that only allows you to import clips you have already shot. I want to live stream straight to Final Cut. I want to be able to see how the vectroscope and waveform monitor is reading. This will allow me to be more accurate in my testing.

It's easy:
Hook the HVX up to the Mac via FireWire
Launch FCP
Set your Capture Scratch location
Open Log and Capture
Go to the Capture Settings tab
Set Device Control to Non-Controllable Device
Set Caapture/Input to match whatever HD variant you have the HVX set in (DVCProHD 720p24, DVCProHD 1080i60, etc )
Frame up your shot
Hit the Capture Now button
and away you go!

Cheers!

What type of tweaking, do you talk about?

Sorry for posting here and not answering your question as I am also interested in the answer as you are.

Sorry... I didn't think you meant streaming via firewire to FCP. Also, make certain that you are not trying to stream 24pNative since that will not stream over firewire.

John's answer is absolutely correct for setting streaming capture.

---I set to B.Press, Normal matrix, -5 detail level., -5 detail core. It looks pretty good, colors really pop. I'm doing more test tonight.

I'll give this a try and see what happens.

I've given this a try and it's not working. what are the camera setting. In "other functions" what should be the settings for:
1394 control
1394 cmd sel
pc mode.

John pilgrim,
thanks for your previous post are there any other menu's to control the fire wire out. I've read the manual pertaining to this and tried various workflows. can you or some one give me their computer set-up along with their camera set-up.

1. Go into your Audio/Video settings: Capture preset should be set to what your recording format is. So if you're shooting 1080 (any frame rate), set the capture preset to DVCPRO HD - 1080i60 48 kHz. If you're shooting 720P/24P set the Capture Preset to DVCPRO HD - 720p24 48 kHz. Set Device Control to Non-Controllable Device.

2. Your Camera should be set in the "Other Functions" menu to: 1394 Control "OFF," 1394 CMD SEL "REC_P" and PC Mode 1394 Device.

Note: Do not set your camera to record 720P/30PN or 720P/24PN. Neither of these framerates are understood by Final Cut and will likely cause your program to crash.

Thanks John for the info. I have another question; I'm new to Apple and I'm using a G4 and a Raid HD so what would I do in addition to this to capture to the raid HD?

well, I've tried those settings and no luck. I've taken the p2 cards out and tried that. I'm getting really frustrated here. If i go to VCR mode and hold down the mode button the P2 cards are mounted via fire wire(which means the computer is recognizing the firewire), but when I'm trying to do capture now, no such luck. Can someone tell me what I'm missing in order to capture straight to my G5 tower. Has anyone successfully captured to there computer using capture now P2cards/no P2 cards
