Re: digitial anamorphic how good is it?

Hey, if you prefer the look of "mid", by all means, use it! That's one of the great things about the DVX, is the wide variety of settings. And, in fact, perhaps for the material you were shooting, "thin" may have been "too thin." I've shot anamorphic/thin stuff and played it on an interlaced TV and it's been just fine, no flicker or aliasing -- but I've also shot anamorphic/thin and it's looked *horrible* on a TV. It all depends on what's in the shot.

In my limited experience with the DVX100A, I found that "thin" worked just fine with squeeze mode, but obviously you will be even safer with "mid" mode. I'd never use "thick" with squeeze mode, I think you're giving up too much resolution, unnecessarily.

Barry,

First, i agree, i just hate the look of "thick" mode with progressive.
As for the flickering effect on a interlaced TV, i think it is normal, i can see it on every rented 24p (film) DVD, so i dont care.
I just find that the "thin" and "thick" modes looks softer than "mid", but i dont know what is the technical explaination.

to my eyes, the "mid" setting looks sharper than "thin" and "thick" on my DVX100A, but i would like to know "why".

Is it an illusion (edge enhancement ?) or is it a real resolution increase, that, i would like to understand.

BTW...

I'm considering to buy the anamorphic Panny lens, will i see an imporvement ?

Re: digitial anamorphic how good is it?

I haven't spent enough time with the 100A to really explore "mid" mode. Check the footage on a progressive monitor (like your computer monitor) instead of a television. "Thin" should be noticeably sharper than either "mid" or "thick".

The anamorphic adapter will give an improvement, but the effect is more noticeable the larger your screen. On a small screen (like a 13" TV) you probably won't see any difference at all. On a 60" TV, the anamorphic will look sharper. On a 10' projection it's quite a bit sharper.
