The zoom H4 is actually great. Pickups are terrible. However, if you put it through a mixpre it will work wonders for you as the pickups in the mix pre are very good.
 
The H4 also has combo inputs for two XLR or 1/4" plugs. And provides phantom power as well. It doesn't do time code, but there's really nothing else competitive in its price range.

This guy, by sound devices. I've use the MixPre H4 combo for almost every film I've done. Used a Tascam HD once, and didn't like it as much. The sound devices MixPre allows you to send tone over and the difference with pickups is almost night and day. You can get some good sound out of it. Plus it takes care of the annoying level adjustment on the H4
