Im looking for something to record interviews for the magazine i work for. But we want something that records the sound good enough so we can use it on the web or under some video. Something that works with apple computer(mp3, aiff...) and easy to carry.

any ideas??

thanks

Get yourself a Edirol R9 and a Mixpre and you have yourself a very portable stereo recorder.

Cheers

Look at something like a Minox DMP-3 (soon to hit the streets); can do multiple things, one of them being a voice recorder.

EDIT:
Oh, I only saw "for web", and not the "video" part. Although the DMP-3 is neat, it mightn't be good enough for "proper" video.
I'll probably get one when they come out and find out...

either the edirol R9 or the MAudio Microtrack. Besides that, there isn't anything smaller or cheaper that's good.

Dave, have you talked to people that are happy with the Microtrack? So far I have just been hearing the negative reports; poor meters, under powered phantom, and non-replacable batteries (that is the one that did it for me). It seems M-Audio could come out with a version 2 of the Microtack that really kicks ass but this version just comes up short.

Except for phantom power the R9 seems to have done it much better, and cheaper. Couldn't really get phantom power with 2 AA batteries anyways.

Love to hear any input you might have from your contacts at Coffey, personal, or elsewhere.

Cheers

I hate the Microtrack for pretty much all the reasons you stated. Robert Kennedy at Coffey Sound has one and he likes it, but he's the only person that I know that likes it. I only mentioned it because theh original poster wanted something small and cheap. The R9 is a much better choice. Sony has a kick ass handheld flash recorder, but it's really expensive. It's the best one out of the handhelds, though, and if I needed something like that, the Sony is what I would get.

What about the new Zaxcom recorder? Anyone know when that one is due? I know it was a bit pricey (starting at $995) but it sure looked like it had a great set of features for a small package.

I believe that $995 is single channel though with a second costing a bunch more. It would have to make me breakfast to be worth that much. :) Plus, it also my understanding it's "vaporware" right now but I haven't been keeping up on it's progress. I certainly will be curious when it does make it market....just can't imagine buying anything like that for that much money.

I was an early adopter of the Micro Track. The cons you listed are all very much true and early firmware issues (are now fixed) have ruined one recording gig I had. It is a great example of how some companies are releasing products that aren't fully baked.

However, if used properly, it is a handy and relatively inexpensive device that has many uses. I also recently picked up an ART Phantom II Dual Phantom Power Adapter (runs on batteries) to use with it to power bigger mics.

New zax recorder? Im interested... whats the scoop guys, anyone have a link? There is still not a single Zaxcom product in South Africa, so Im keen to be first :)

PMD-660 would also be in the microtrack range. Better than the microtrack in some ways (replaceable batteries, decent meters, XLR connectors...). So if you don't need higher sample rates (and it doesnt sound like you do) then that is a poss option.

Zazcom's new recorder is about the size of one of their new transmitters. It was psuedo working at NAB. I was working their booth and had to demo it. I think the two channel version is around $1500, but don't quote me on that. I don't know it's current delivery schedule right now.

I think the best bet is the HD-P2. For the money it's really cool, and I like the fact that you can give it timecode.

Any thoughts on using the updated MicroTrack II with a Countryman B3 Lav? I wanted to know how effective a hidden lav such as the B3 would handle dialogue centered between two actors. I am short on an audio department :) and I might also be able to use this approach in wedding ceremonies. Any thoughts are most welcome! Thanks!
