Digital breakup when recording SD to tape

I was recording a jazz combo with the HVX as a primary and a DVX as a backup. SEVERAL times while I was digitizinfg the footage I noticed the audio drop out for about 2 seconds and the picture looked like this:

This is a new camera and I was using Panasonic AY-DVM83MQ tape.

Any ideas? This is unaaceptable for paying gigs.

Clean the heads, that's the "venetian blind" effect that happens when a particle gets stuck to the heads.

And yes this happens with a brand-new camera, I believe there must be some sort of manufacturing residue or something left on, I'd recommend giving a brand-new camera a head-cleaning before using.

And no, you shouldn't be using 83MQ tapes either, the manual specifically recommends against using 83-minute tapes. Not that that caused this issue, but that it may cause issues later on.
