Digital Bolex weeks away

http://youtu.be/E306D88l6Bk

There it is! Unboxing video of my digital bolex!

EDIT: It should be noted that @elleschneider tweeted me saying that the crank issue was one that should have been fixed in a past verision of the camera, and they simply sent me the wrong one, so they are going to send me the correct crank.

looks sweet indeed.

once you add that lens it looks pretty heavy for one hand operation! what would you say the entire weight is with your lens?

I think part of that was the fact that I was using a wide angle fairly close to me since I didn't have much room in my office. It actually isn't bad! Honestly I think it might be lighter than my c100. It FEELS much different cause the weight is concentrated more in a block whereas the c100 is concentrated over a wider surface area in some degrees. I will say this though, I stuck it on my edelkrone modula shoulder rig and it fit sooo well, much better than my c100 would on such a rig. didn't even have to add counterbalance to the end of the rig like I would with my c100

Pretty awesome. I've always been hoping this would come to market. Looking good.

That said, the functionality of the hand crank is wasted on functions that have nothing to do with a crank operation and I'm afraid at this point, the crank paired with these functions have zero advantage versus typical well placed user buttons. I'd like to ask if there is a crank lock of sorts, otherwise I see it being a negative in the sense that if you set it to ISO or ShutterSpeed, the damn thing will get bumped by accident quite a bit.

Very disappointed in the crank functions.

That said, everything else is looking very solid.

Here's some super quick dng's from christmas morning. I like the image, but this camera is starved for light. Have to shoot wide open pretty much all the time if you're shooting indoors even in good light. 200 is more optimal of an ISO than 400. 400 is usable but DR seems to go down with it and color starts to shift odd and of course added grain. The grain though is I guess more "filmic" that what you'd get with many CMOS sensors, but it is quite present in low light. This camera is SHARP in good light. These were all shot wide open with my rokinon 16mm f2. Very easy to handhold without a rig honestly.

Thank you. Will you be putting together something in the next week or so? And which lens mount adapter do you have?

Is it Razz16’ excellent grade or does the D16 have more stops DR above neutral gray than other inexpensive RAW cams? hard to tell if it is there ir I want it to be there, but there is something different about this grade.

I think you brought the highlights down too far. The crunched area where it is was clearly blown out upon capture (on the counter) is now less than pure white, by a good deal. I think you can get away with this if there was a gradient, but since that pool of light is a blown out crunch-berry spot, the highlight being 10-20% from pure white is a little too manipulated IMO.

Not that it matters, but it just caught my eye.

Everything else looks great.

As an example, I pulled this image into Photoshop and added a circle of pure white into the image.

This is what I got:

Of course my 100% white might be beyond broadcast levels. I don't have any true scopes on this monitor... but it does show how much these blown out highlights have been dragged down and 'muddied' just a tad.

Like the highlights in the first grade much better, nice and soft, I would be very pleased with it. With the second grade, my attention is drawn to the right corner, not sure if it was your intention but it looks dirty.

Here is a short clip on youtube filmed by Phillip Bloom:
Here is a link to graded version:
I just don't know why people keep insisting on mudding a perfectly good footage with "grain". To my eye looks like cheap video shot on DVX100 in low light. It doesn't look like film at all, looks like a bunch of electronic noise of underexposed CCD. So far I haven't seen a shred of footage that made me want to own this camera. I was really hoping to buy D-16, have a pretty good selection of S16 glass, but picture quality so far looks very uninteresting and video like. What also catches my eye is completely blown highlights of the window. I though with RAW you could avoid that. It really doesn't look any better then any DSLR footage.

Here is first piece of footage that made me a bit excited and gave me hope:
Nice, clean video, without "grain" or any other weirdness. Skin colors looked good, over all has a pretty nice roll-off.

Grade for Bloom's clip. I love the rich refined color palette this camera can produce. I love being able to pull texture, tone, and color out of deep shadows and I love the way different colors of light interplay across the skin tones. Clipping as in the window is pretty graceful.

Not to my eyes. That what I was saying all along- the camera lacks DR, it's nowhere near BMD cameras at the moment. To be honest 12 stops is probably a stretch.

Since I was exposed for the middle, BM cameras would have clipped too. The difference in DR is not that great.
