C100: DIGIC DV 4 Upgrade - Possible?

I've been thinking about Canon's options to transition into 4K, something they will not be able to ignore within a few years. The only real solution I could think of - something that wouldn't render the C500 completely obsolete - is a hardware upgrade along the entire C series that replaces the DIGIC DV 3 processor with a DV 4.

They can't really replace the entire lineup with a new one, because that would make people mad, and that rumoured C200 that shoots 4K back around NAB was just silly. A C400 could make sense, but that still has a considerable advantage over the C500 in that it shoots 4K internally.

To those of you more knowledgeable than me: is this a) technically possible, and b) is it possible that Canon would actually do this?

My largely uneducated guess is that Canon would bring out a new upgraded Camera rather than another hardware upgrade. Possibly a C700?? Or an entirely new line of cameras for 4k.

No way. A C700 would have to cost, what, at least $25k? And the C500 is not selling at $20k. There would need to be some serious price cuts for that to make any sense, and then they run into the problem of deprecation and pissing their customers off again.

It is not even remotely possible to offer that kind of upgrade.

Why on earth would customers be upset? Would their cameras all of a sudden stop producing some of the nicest images available? The c300 is 2.5 years old, therefore so is the c100/500 being they are all scaled from the same technology. If anything, I would say canon's customers are foaming at the mouth for a new line of cameras(myself included).

The only folks that deserve to be mad are the 1DC owners. They bought into an expensive "cinema" camera that doesn't offer even basic cinema tools that a $1700/2500 dslr now does.

I'd pay for it! But I don't see it happening... Canon will milk sales of C100 and C300 (apparently the C500 is a mongrel of the bunch in terms of sales) while they can then introduce something new... eventually in later 2015!

That upgrade for existing cameras is doubtful. Canon will come out with new cameras, and they'll probably do 4k and bring out some new features too. We'll just have to wait and see what they actually are.

Number 7 has has special meaning in Japanese culture, it stands for good luck and prosperity, so it's usually reserved for naming something important. It's also part of the reason why Windows 7 was selling very good in Japan.

A C300 Mark II would be a good bet for NAB2015. It would play off the excellent name the C300 has made for itself without needing to introduce a C200/400/600/700. It would have to provide some form of 4K to survive another 3 year product cycle. Since they wouldn't need to change the sensor it would make sense for some other C500 technology to trickle down.
