Different rebates on DVX100B?

This is an odd situation - the NewEgg site advertises a $350 rebate on the 100B, and B&H advertisies $500 (net price after rebates is within $50 of each other) - both due to expire end of March. The rebate forms appear to be identical, except for the date ranges.

I called NewEgg and asked about their $350 rebate - why it wasn't the $500 rebate. The CS rep called back after a while and said that the $350 was the only one Panasonic would honor for them (NewEgg.) She claims to have called at least five people at Panasonic.

I never heard of two-tier rebates before - for the same product.

All things considered, I would be inclined to go with B&H - but does anyone have experience with this two-tier system? Has anyone tried to file the $500 rebate having bought from NewEgg? (Purchase date range is December 1, 2006 to March 31, 2007)

I'm in the process with the same situation. I hope they honor it because I don't think it's fair that when you go to the Panasonic site, it states that you get $500 rebate starting December 1st.

yeah if you go to panasonic there is a rebate application. fill it out and send it to panasonic. they will take care of the rest.

Newegg is not an authorized dealer, and the units they sell may or may not qualify for any rebate at all. Depends on where they bought them from.

B&H is an authorized dealer and you'll get the full $500 rebate by buying through an authorized dealer.

Postscript - bought from B&H

I subsequently has some conversations with NewEgg customer support, and did not get a good feeling that they really knew what they were doing here.

I was also suspicious of NewEgg's "open box specials" on the 100B for their price of the camera net the $500 rebate (limit 2?) That seems to indicate they were getting a bunch of returns.

The more I thought about it, the less sense it made to go with an unauthorized delaer on a purchase of this size and significance. Additionally, I've always found B&H to be very competitive (I've bought a bunch of stuff from them over the years - both still photography and video) with quick shipping and recently (on a used Lowel Vip light) great at follow-up (I got a call back the same day I sent the email) and providing a small part that was missing (Tip - B&H has even better deals in their used dept - check it out).

I also think that Jan (the Panasonic DVX product manager) has a point in asking that the Panasonic authorized resellers be supported. If I'm going to make a committment with this size of purchase - I want the reseller to make similar committment to me to back it up and not cut corners.

So I ordered from the 100B B&H and it showed up three days later. Promptly sent in the paperwork - the rebate's nice - but I'm really waiting for Barry's book - boy does the 100B owner's manual leave a lot to be desired (I've used Sonys, Cannons, etc. - this isn't the first camera of this type I've used)

One final note on NewEgg - I don't think they are a disreputable vendor - I just think they are out of their element (business model) here - they are a high-volume, commodity seller and not set up as an authorized retailer for specialty items - which B&H is. I've bought from NewEgg before and will again.

B&H is now pretty much my exclusive video gear supplier (my wish list is as long as your arm.) Sure, I shop around, but I keep finding that all roads (or rather, Google searches) lead to B&H.

Now that I'm a DVX100B owner - I guress I'll be hanging out here even more - thanks to Barry and the others for suppporting the DVX owners.
