Different battery life estimates on NP-F970s?

I don't quite understand what is going on here. So I had a big shoot today and rented an FS100 to go alongside my FS700. I threw the batteries on my dual Sony charger last night and was perplexed when I saw the following...

Rental battery on left side of the charger, my battery on the right. Left picture's LCD screen indicates the rental battery life, right picture's LCD screen indicates my battery's life. Both batteries are the same mAh rating.

Lo and behold, on the shoot today I went through almost two 970's on my FS700 and still had about 10% left on the FIRST battery on the FS100. Both were recording almost identical durations.

Now, do the batteries somehow know how long they last on whatever camera they are used with most often? So if the FS100 draws less power, does the battery know that it averages 8+ hours on a charge? Whereas my batteries live on the FS700 all the time, so they know they only last 4 hours on that camera?

Just wondering if anyone else has come across this. Just wanted to learn a bit more about why this would be showing such drastically different times.

The FS100 does use much less power then the FS700 from the reviews I've read. People have used 1 battery for a full day shoot on the FS100 and 2 for the FS700 so that would explain the difference. Now how the Charger knows that? I have no clue.

My theory is that since they are InfoLithium batteries, they are chipped to track the time it takes to deplete the battery. Since the rental battery is always on the FS100, it has probably learned that it lasts 8+ hours, while my battery is used exclusively on the FS700.

If my memory serves correctly, Canon LP-E6 batteries are chipped and track shutter count during the current charge cycle. I bet it's something like that.
