Hey all,

I am looking to become the next user of the Panasonic AG-DVX100, but I am hoping to get a couple of questions answered. I'm sure these topics have been covered an insane amount of times, so if you would rather re-direct me to the answers, that'd be fine...otherwise, if someone could point out the basic differences for me, that'd be great.

My questions are...

(1) What are the big differences between the DVX100 and the DVX100A?

and

(2) What are the differences between the U.S. Release version and the International version that you can get for much cheaper?

Thanks everyone for your help!

2. improved colours

3. EVF dtail...really a very helpful featrue

Re: Differences...

Okay, awesome...thanks.

What about the differences between the "U.S. Release" version and the "International" or "Gray" version?

Re: Differences...

no idea about that....though I hope u alrady know the differences between the NTSC(basically a US version) and the PAL version(an intrnational version)? Is this what u really meant?

Re: Differences...

If by "Gray" version you mean "Gray Market" version...it's cheaper because it was stolen or something. Buy the regular one, and you won't be a criminal... :-/

Re: Differences...

Gray market means the camera was imported outside of authorized US distribution channels. Because Panasonic USA supports the warranty repair system, a gray market camera will never have a true Panasonic US warranty. The money that goes to support the warranty service comes from authorized US sales, so if you buy a gray camera, you aren't entitled to a US warranty.

Some of the dealers in gray merchandise will outright lie about the warranty--falsely claiming that their cameras have Panasonic US warranties. Others will include their own non-Panasonic warranty--something of dubious value.

My advice is the buy your DVX100a from an authorized dealer and confirm the dealer on the Panasonic web site--don't ask the dealer.

Re: Differences...

Gray market can come from several sources. They could be imported non-US models, as Barry_S says. It could theoretically be stolen, as Mike said. Or, it could be used, or returns, or refurbs, or re-sold stock coming to that gray marketer via an unscrupulous authorized dealer. In that last case, the camera probably will carry a US warranty.

The point is that you don't know. You are taking some level of risk. Maybe a lot, maybe a little, but with a gray marketer, the only thing you can be assured of is that you're not buying from an authorized Panasonic reseller, so there's really no way to know where the camera came from.

Gray marketers sometimes feel that they don't have to give you the contents of the box, either. After all, they don't have any relationship with Panasonic, they don't have any contract with Panasonic, they're buying the cameras from whoever and wherever, so they feel perfectly entitled to open up the box and sell you JUST the camera, and then charge you quite a bit if you want, say, the manual, the battery, the remote, all the accessories that would normally come with it. Gray marketers are under *no* obligation, because they have no relationship with Panasonic to maintain.

Panasonic lists 25 major changes (including the color change). This does not include the 12bit A/D change. In the article I wrote comparing the original 100 to the 100A, it took 2752 words to cover the changes and provide some examples where these improvements can help.

In short, the 100A is the way to go. I sold a 5 month old 100 to get the first 100A... the changes are that significant. If it helps, I usually keep cameras for 3-5 years.

Re: Differences...

agree.

I sold my DVX100 (6 months old) and bought the DVX100A just few days after trying the 100A.

The most significant differences i see is better and cleaner color, cleaner overall image. Very clean in fact.

The Vdetail freq "mid" setting gives a very beautifull image with progressive 24pAdv mode.

You can use telephoto much closer to the subject, thus narrowing the dept of field.

It is much easier to make focus with the detail enhancer (that is not recorded on tape).

The new CinelikeV mode is very beautifull.

and finally, there is a knee on the cinelike mode which works wonderfully to avoid burn spots in very high luma objects.

That's essentially why i switched to the DVX100A.
