difference in deck quality?

I have a DVX100 which I've been using as a deck for about a month, and I just picked up a Panasonic PV-DV53. I'm thinking I'd like to start using the dv53 as my deck just because it's a much cheaper camera...if I am using it only as a deck, is it the same quality as the dvx100?

Re: difference in deck quality?

Yes.

The DVX's deck is just a deck....it records digital data onto a MiniDV tape. The quality of the DVX's imagery comes from the camera's CCDs. It's actually better to use a deck rather than the camera itself, because it won't put wear on your DVX.

A good deck

A good deck

I was also wondering about the use of the DVX just as a deck.

What will be a good affordable deck to use instead of the DVX?

Re: difference in deck quality?

Well if you're really tight on your budget...get a lower end MiniDV camera with Firewire capabilities. It'll play back your tape, and if you need it to, you can grab and go with it as a home video camera.

So wait, are you meaning here that you'd not use the DVX for anything *but* deck purposes? Shame on you :P

No, bien sûr. But I just got it 2 days ago and didn't had time to go out and shoot, with a long week-end coming up, i will probably have time for a first test.

Re: difference in deck quality?

*whew*, that's a relief :P

But yeah, there's no problem using it as a deck....but if you want your camera's decks to last longer, it's better to get another device to play back your footage 8)

If you can afford it, the best deck to use with the DVX is

It has a nice little flipout screen, and you can use it as a backup device hooked up to the DVX (record to 2 tapes at the same time, or auto switch so it starts recording to this deck as soon as the main tape runs out in the camera)

But most importantly, it uses the exact same heads as the DVX has, this is good because different heads put different wear (i.e. grooves) in the tape, and if you use the same heads the grooves are in the same place.

You can also hook up a lipstick camera to it and use it as a spy cam or a extreame action/Emo/Stunt camera

Re: difference in deck quality?

Jarred, it seems like i couldn't find this one on EVS or B&H? Maybe it's me...

How much do you think this one will be? Because the other Panasonic deck is really expensive just for DV Playback (Something like 2000$ USD).

I am pretty much in the same situation, using my DVX as a deck because i don't have any other choices. But i am still looking for a solution without paying something like 3000 $CA for it.

Thanks for the info ;D

Following Jared's statement concerning the unavailable Panasonic Deck, is this Sony deck really going to be a good choice to use with the DVX? (Like for example, if i put my MQ tape in the DVX then in the Sony, am i going to be able to put it back in the DVX without damaging the heads?) I don't have a deep knowledge concerning technical details of decks.

Thanks for the info.

Re: difference in deck quality?

If their DSR-11 is any testament, I have never had a problem doing that. I do have a question though, why would you want to put a tape back in your camera after it's been shot? To add more footage to it? Just curious.

Re: difference in deck quality?

Yeah, if for example its the last tape of a shoot and you recorded 5 minutes on it. Would be great if you wouldn't waste the other 55 mins. I tend to have as much respect for video tapes than i would have with a roll of film :D

Re: difference in deck quality?

Cool! That's rare, dude, most people say, "It's just tape, keep it rollin'..." ;D

In my own experience, that has never been an issue. True, Sony decks prefer Sony tape, but I have used my DSR-11 to make hundreds of clones and layoffs from AVID to panasonic tape, and used it to digitize at least as many MQ source tapes from my DVX. Never had a problem. It's just a really robust piece of gear.

Re: difference in deck quality?

I see. Anybody else would be able to give me some advices on this matter? The Sony GV-D1000 looks like a pretty good choice for me since i wont be using DV or DVCAM formats, only mini-dv MQ tapes from my DVX. I also love the fact that it has a small LCD screen because i can't afford a monitor right now for editing.

Re: difference in deck quality?

Maybe there is going to have some issues with the 24p advanced if i digitize my footage with the Sony deck, edit it in FCP4, then record it back on the sony deck on a MQ tape? :o

Re: difference in deck quality?

I shot my very first DVX project on 24PA, and digitized it to the computer through my Canon ZR-20. No problems there. It's still 29.97 on the tape, from what I've been told.

Re: difference in deck quality?

I've got a whole thread going on white noise on the DVX100a through monitoring on the headphones, but given that you all are talking about using (or not using) the camera as a deck, have any of you noticed that hiss?

It's a white noise hiss. I swapped out my VX1000 with a DVX100a to test it, and the audio hiss makes using the DVX100a useless as a deck. Outside of outputing picture to a monitor, the audio is useless for monitoring any audio/mixing audio down.

Are any of you running into this using the DX100a as a deck? Thanks.

Re: difference in deck quality?

I'm not sure Slave2lab.

The Sony GV-D1000, i'd still like to have a few opinions concerning its use with the DVX100A. Anybody?

Jarred! Maybe you have an idea where i could still buy the Panasonic deck you were talking about? 8)
