Do you think it is possible to use these types of units for recording ambient sound or would a parabolic microphone(yes a cheaper one)
work better? Just wondering how multpurpose these little gadgets are.
First as others have pointed out parabolic's are not good for most (well just about any) things. If your trying to grab a specific bird squawk in a tree you can't get close to maybe. Never for ambience, dialog and almost never for FX.
second a parabolic is not a recorder so it's not "should I use a mic or a recorder" it's should I use this mic. You will always need a recorder.
If you are recording FX and ambiences then a decent cardioid or hyper cardioid microphone is your workhorse. A stereo mic (or stereo pair) is good for ambient recordings and backgrounds and some FX. A shotgun is sometimes helpful but generally less often than you might think.
