difference between 720p and 720pn

I'm currently on a steep learning curve, but hopefully this is an easy question for you guys. I'm trying to understand why someone would choose to shoot 720pn instead of 720p. Is it something to do with how you'd end up editing the footage?

Also, just wondering why all the different varicam options are only available on 720p/n. Why are they not available on higher or lower resolutions?

Thanks in advance
J

720pN for recording to the P2 cards.

720P for recording to an external firewire recorder (like a firestore or a DVCPRO-HD tape deck or direct-to-computer).

It's more efficient in that no duplicate frames have to be removed, and it's more space efficient because no duplicate frames are stored on the cards.

The other thing pN mode gives you is instant feedback on how your variable-frame-rate clips look. Record in pN, play back, and you'll see the effect instantly (vs. recording in 720P mode, where you'd need to extract the frames in post before you know how the effect looks).
