difference between 24p and 24p advanced?

No picture quality difference.

If you are editing in a 29.97 timeline, shoot 24p

If you are editing in a 23.967 timeline, shoot 24pA.

The difference between the two is how the 24 progressive frames are fit into the 60 interlaced field format. In both cases the frames are broken into two fields consisting of either the odd or even lines of the frame. The 24 frames make up 48 interlaced fields which is still 12 short of the 60 field structure. To make up the difference one field is repeated and it is the repeat pattern that makes the difference between 24P and 24PA cadence.

If you cut on PPro, then shoot 24PA.

With Vegas you can use either, but it's better to use advanced. With FCP, use advanced.

But as BennisHahn says above, if you're going to edit on a 24p timeline, shoot 24pA. It's that automatic.

how about if you shoot 48fps and bring it to a 24p timeline in vegas, just for slow motion, this is what I dont understand if you shoot say 10 seconds worth of footage at 48fps and bring it to a 24p timeline but you only want 5 seconds of slow motion but still need the remaining 5 seconds, how is this done and make it look good?

I wasn't aware that the dvx is capable of shooting 48p. Also, slowing down '48p' footage would make it longer than the original footage was (>10 seconds)

when i looked at the posting while going through the boards earlier, the first person i could think was Adam Wilt... Also check this out- Adam gives a seminar which goes in depth on some things that are "need to know" on DV and so on ( see "Maximizing Success with DV Cameras, Part 2")... Very informative plus check out the session with John Jackman as well...

Use this link

hope this helps- peace,
Elijah

p.s.- set aside a bit of time so you can watch those videos, they are fairly long and i recommend having a notebook to jot down a few things because its a lot of info- especially if anyone is unfamiliar with some of the topics. However I think that Adam as well as John break down the topics even so that super noobs can keep up plus there's even several things useful for anyone experienced as well...A+++
