Diegetic Sound Advice

Hello, I just finished shooting a short film in a coffee shop. We have decided to place music in the scene and want it to sound like it is coming from speakers inside of the coffee shop. Any advice or tips on how to make it become a part of the scene and distinguish it from a non-diegetic source would be greatly appreciated. Unfortunately, this is an afterthought so we don't have any visual cues.

Thank you,

Daniel

Or maybe talk with the store manager to see if you could re-record during closing hours. Play the music through the speakers and record the store.

Roll off the highs and lows, leaving a peak around 1-3k. lay it low in the mix. If you add reverb, keep the room size low to prevent long tails, and high pass the reverb. That should get your pretty close.

Easy and free is to play the music back in a similar space and rerecord it. This is what is called "worldizing". Works great.

Second choice is SpeakerPhone by Audio Ease. It's a plugin and is sort of your personal worldizer. It uses a bunch of modules to put your sound through just about anything. Works great, lots of fun, but not cheap.
