Didn't get mine today!! And won't for a long time!!

It's great that shipments are finally trickling in, and people are getting their HVXs, but just figured I'd start a thread for us poor saps who didn't get on a pre-order list early enough to already have a camera, and just want some place to vent.

I'm 79 on the EVS list and, like everyone else, eager to get the camera, but I'm using this waiting period as a time to reflect... reflect on how angry I am at myself for not putting a pre-order in sooner... on how, by the time I get my camera, the "A" revision will probably be on its way... on how I don't have to yet start paying interest on my credit card to which I will charge my camera purchase...

Damn it, I want my camera! WAH! Screw it, I'm getting an FX-1. No, no I'm not... I'm sorry, look I was upset, I said some things I didn't mean... I was thinking of the HVX the whole time.

I'm # who-knows on the mysteriously ambiguous Spec-Comm list, from early January. I'm sure I'm in for quite a wait.

The dealers I've been talking to recently, in deciding whether to get on waiting lists, have all told me that I wouldn't get one by this summer, and it would be likely next Fall. My impression is not the number of people buying this camera, but Panasonics low production of it (at least this year).

I concur, that with 18 month product development cycles etc), that the HVX100A is probably already on the drawing board. Perhaps, Panasonic in NJ has already submitted their wishlist for additional features, to Japan?

I've seen this happen with Apple Macs. By the time you get the most recent system, another one is announced to ship.

Good for all of you that got on the waiting list early. I can't wait 6-9 mos for a camera, so I will get a DVX100B for now. Maybe for me, by the time the HVX200A comes out, Panasonic will have ramped up their production line?

I am not on ANY pre-order list, but I would like to purchase this camera. I don't need it RIGHT NOW so I didn't bother with pre-orders, but now am I screwed?

I figured they were having a problems with the release, but I never thought the camera would continue at a trickle. Will it trickle release for months and months? Is there no way I'm getting a camera by spring because I didn't pre-order a camera last year? They said the camera would be released 2005. I didn't think I'd have a problem getting a camera spring 2006. I mean seriously, give me a break.

Has there been any official statements about the future availabilty of this camera?

I would think not. Good products are nearly always under review, (using the DVX-100 to "100A" as an example), many of the forthcoming changes come from user feedback. I think you'll agree there hasn't yet been a lot of that (user feedback) yet on the HVX-200 . . .

I don't think we're necessarily screwed. Several dealers have a few hundred people on their lists, but it doesn't mean those people will actually buy the camera. They could drop off the lists. Also, Panasonic could ramp up production as time goes on.

True, but ostensibly, Panasonic NJ has known about the specs for this camera for at least 1-2 yrs. So undoubtedly, feature requests which were not honored in this initial entry version, is already being considered for the upgraded camera.

You are absolutely correct that user feedback is incorporated into future versions, but I wonder whether this is the "last minute" feature requests that are submitted to the engineers.

I can't imagine Panasonic resting on its laurels, and waiting for consumer desires to drive and guide their future product development. Sony, JVC and Canon would eat their lunch. IMO, it's more likely that Panasonic has a 10 yr roadmap for camera technology and is already testing prototypical CMOS, and other new technologies, for their existing product line. Certainly, American consumer wishes will be considered in these decisions, as you say.

I am on the EVS list but have no idea where I am at.
I got a confirmation from Rush on Dec 13.
Any ideas????

IMO, you should be alright on the EVS list. Because, if I'm not mistaken, a deposit is not required, which means that there could be a lot of "looky loos" who may drop off the list and not actually buy a camera. In my experience, the lists where your credit card is charged the full value, while waiting, are the ones that will be more difficult to rise rapidly on (because people have actually paid money for the cameras).

I have ordered mine end january from Leo Stores in Vancouver Canada, and I am expecting it by mid-february + 2 day shipping ;)

David from Leo store said here that there is still a few place for the mid-february preorder list. Now anything can happen.

The worst is this site is getting slower and slower !!! Jarred, did the additional server went through last saturday ?

I can't say I disagree with anything you have said here . . . remember though that they were "tweaking" right up until the camera shipped (and perhaps a little bit after). I think my only disappointment will be not having "the flip" in the LCD screen (or the output). Maybe that will be addressed in the next version . . . then again not everyone will need that feature (but I'd sure like to have it).

If you need the camera by spring, I'd buddy up to a small dealer in your town or one nearby. Panny seems to be spreading out the cams among different dealers rather than favoring the larger vendors.

No need to worry

No need to worry

First of all, how come everyone here is complaining how they're so low on the totem pole on the EVS list? THEY'RE NOT THE ONLY DEALER SELLING HVX200!!! If you just spend a little effort, you'll find probably a hundred dealers all across the U.S. selling the HVX200 with no or short waiting lists. And these guys may even have better pricing.

Second, if you don't absolutely have to have the HVX200 now, why not wait a couple of months to buy it? The prices will drop significantly, by about $1000-1500 as soon as the initial demand is filled. In the meantime, just rent. It's up to you to balance out how much your saving my waiting and how much you have to shell out when you rent.

Third, you will see a sudden rush of deliveries of the HVX200 by March. Don't you think Panasonic is ramping up the production 24/7? They probably hired temp workers just to meet the demand. It just makes good business sense. They would never risk losing customers to another competitor, especially if their competitor releases a new cam.

So stop all this griping!

And with regards to the picture quality, from the reports I've read, all the under $10,000 camera have very similar qualities. They all have their strengths and weaknesses. But guess what, your general audience will never know the difference. Heck, the audience can't even tell the difference between HD and film. Ask a person on the street if they know that Star Wars and Once Upon a Time in Mexico were shot on HD and film and they'll give you a blank stare. Now, of course, if your audience is a roomful of cinematographers, then you're screwed. But, you know what, if your audience IS a roomful of cinematographers, then you probably should be looking into another line of work.

In other words, spend less time complaining and more time working on your creative skills. I, for one, would much rather watch a greatly written movie than a greatly photographed movie. Take a look at that script again. Are you really sure you're ready to shoot that thing even if you have the HVX200 in hand?

Now I've spent too much time on this forum already. On to my script.

You are exactly correct! I've spoken with a few small, but authorized Panasonic dealers, who've only ordered 5 HVX200's for their whole store, and only have 2 people on their list. Their Panasonic reps have given them firm delivery dates. Whereas, I've spoken with the elephant-sized dealers, who have 300 on their waiting lists, but who have no idea when their orders will be filled, by Panasonic.

Also, the small guys are not price-gouging, because of increased demand and low production, like the big guys with the huge waiting lists. Their HVX200's are still in the $5500 to $5600 range (similar to the pre-order days pricing).

is there price gouging? who?

i was under the impression that hvx has disappointed and that prices were actually falling as people were losing interest.

In case you couldn't tell from my goofy rant, this was meant to be a silly thread for us who don't yet have the camera and jealously read all the posts from those who do (threads with titles like "ordered mine yesterday and got it today!").

Yeah, I could easily order from another vendor, but EVS didn't require a deposit, they're great to deal with, plus I can actually go pick the camera up from them once they have one for me, so I can check it out before bringing it home.

As for the price going down, I doubt it, especially not anytime soon, and certainly not by over a grand. The demand for the camera will likely be high for quite some time, especially as more people use them and more footage gets seen. The DVX only came down in price a few hundred dollars over its life-span.

Well, I don't know if its exploiting the cameras popularity. But several authorized dealers had the camera around $5500 when it was able to be pre-ordered. I notice now, that the big guys have raised the price to around $6000, but some of the little guys have kept the $5500 to $5600 price (as during the Fall).

I expect that in the mid-february, there should be a bigger shippement sent to everyone. But nothing to fill out the 100+ people on preorder, but if they go look at other small vendor, they might have a chance, like I will ;)
