Last week a colleague visit me with his nikon d90 and we did some test side by side
d90 and mine hvx200.

We checkt everything lock the aperture etc.
But the result of the d90 is so bad it's even to bad i wouldn't think about to take some not serious holiday films .
And that AVI format is real a rubbish you can't do anything on the Final cut.
I'm very disappointed with this device there was a little wish to make easy DOF footage.
Now i have look to the adapter market again and hope that there is getting progress.

maybe you should try shooting in 720p instead of the low quality sd you're apparently using now? :-) the files work fine in final cut 6 btw. you just have to change the rt option to unlimited.

Regarding your D90 frame grab, yes, you seem to be in a low-resolution LV capture mode. I'm looking at my 1280 x 720 D90 LV footage on a 52" Sharp LCD and it looks pretty good, far better than your grab would suggest.

Would you mind explaining your D90 ->FCP6 workflow a bit more in detail please?

This was shooting on 720p
I just input in FCP but when look the avi file with QT it has the same results directly from the sd card
Maybe i did something wrong
FCP :hdv 720p easy setup

if that's 720p i'll eat my nikkor 24mm. i'm trying to help, so take it or leave it. i'm not interested in discussing with trolls.

i use the prores 1280x720 24p sequence setting and change the timebase from 23.98 to 24. then i just set the rt option to unlimited rather than safe, and everything works fine, full rt playback and all. you can use any rt extreme compatible timeline, like uncompressed, hdv, dvcpro, i use prores because it's an online quality codec without the insane storage requirements of uncompressed hd.

check out my rescaler plugin too, posted in the stairstepping thread as well as on my homepage www.mattias.nu. i apply it to all clips and it's realtime.

ok, sorry for accusing you of being a troll. i see now that you've edited your post after i replied. do you have any weird codecs installed? what does it say in qt player? it should say "apple opendml".

/matt

I don't no it's a week a go i will look again try another time I play with QT that has the codec Flip4mac that's all QT version 7.2

there are plenty of clips on vimeo, and several posted on this board too, in the stairstepping thread for example. register and you can get the original. you should really have researched this before posting. you would have known that if you get results like that you've done something wrong.

i think most experienced d90 users can agree with me that the d90 is a peculiar device. you have to take the necessary steps in order to get good footage, simple as that. its easier to take sh*ttier footage than better is what im saying

I did enough research and saw lot of footage on vimeo but i what to download raw files
and look at on FCP
The footage we shot on nikon looks good on the nikon LCD with the lens 18-200mm.
And I know diffrence of size's pixels SD and HD material and this was HD material.
But what do you except from a file who is 140 mb against 1,2 GB from HVX ??

if you sign up at Vimeo, you can download the files (not sure they are raw footage, but much better quality)

*a lot* more than what you've shown us. i'm not joking, but i'm starting to get a feeling you do. your still is certainly a joke, you gotta believe me. there's nothing acceptable about it and it looks nothing like what you're supposed to get from the d90. even if it was 720p at some point it isn't now. or am i missing something? to me it's so obvious i'm looking at a scaled up image that it hurts.

here's a short clip i shot. it's h.264 compressed but you'll get the idea.

Wow this is very good, why did I miss so much pixels ?
It looks with yours sample and the all I have seen so far I agree mine grab looks like SD quality yes
With this results in your clip I will run to the store
I will try again next week and get back to you
Is there a difference with PAL or NTSC record connected to the quality.
Do you use the stock lens 18-105mm ??

the video recording is the same regardless of video standard, it's just the output, and besides it's switchable so i don't think there's any difference between the models. i used the nikkor 24mm f/2 for that one, my favorite lens for video, i like to go either wider or longer for stills. i didn't get any lens with the camera since the options are either annoyingly slow or even more annoyingly expensive. i need to find a nice wide/normal zoom that's fast and has manual aperture and a nice focus ring but still auto exposes for stills which the d90 doesn't do with manual lenses. i'm thinking of the tokina 20-35 f/2.8. anybody tried it?
