GH2 Did Francis Ford Coppola really prefer the Gh2 at the Zacuto shootout

@realfilmgeek, keep your canon for stills. I have a gh2. But I dont bother doing stills with it much because my t3i just kills it in that arena.

I've had the opposite experience, and have talked 3 co-workers and 2 departments where I work into switching to GH2s - 9 cameras so far, and this was before the 2012 Zacuto Shootout. Another friend compared his 7D footage to my hacked GH2 footage and he's ready to switch as well.

You are no doubt trying harder than me. my efforts have basically been "Well if you're looking in the $800 range you should look at the Gh2. It's probably a better camera at that price point than the t2i/t3i. It has a lot of issues, but overall a better camera for video".

I had the same experience as many where people were focused only on the Canons. I have just got my D800 for my photography job and just tested it against a gh2 and 7d for sharpness here http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthrea...between-Nikon-D800-Panasonic-GH2-and-Canon-7D and you can see how much low resolution the 7d is compared to the D800 and gh2. The gh2 is still the sharpess but the d800 is close enough at least for me, albeit with some moirer/aliasing.

From what I have seen from some preliminary test of the mosaic filter, in terms of camera the D800 could be a much better full frame camera than the 5d3 in video. With an external recorder, it would be much better than the 5d, even comparable or better than a hacked gh2 depending on your priorities. Not in ultimate sharpness, but I would trade that for 1 to 2 stop better DR. I am not disregarding the gh2 and will keep for now as my go to video camera of choice, but another camera that is passing under the radar.

I have recently been debating selling my T2I (with magic lantern firmware) and getting a GH2 and that was before the shootout. I'm really thinking about it the only thing that would stink is getting new lenses. OH well I'll at least wait to see what happens with the GH3.

Of course, the trick with waiting for a GH3 is that it'll probably take months to get one, and then if it's a killer update, the demand for lenses will probably soar.

There will really be no point in getting a GH3 right away. It will be inferior to the GH2 until the firmware is hacked, just like the GH1 was superior to the GH2 until it was hacked. 1080p 60 GOP12 @ 28mb/s is going to be terrible on the GH3 until its boosted to well over 60mb/s.

Ya but once the GH3 comes out GH2 prices go down! Making the switch a little easier for me. One of the things making me not want to switch is finding a good wide angles lens for the GH2, I have a canon 11-16mm (and it is a lens I will miss if I switch over) but I could maybe sell it and with some extra cash upgrade to the 12-35mm F2.8 lens? Just an idea for now.

This Zacuto test did a lot to boost the GH2's profile. Props to Zacuto for including it and using a super high hack.

I just wonder if some people realized that while the camera can shoot great footage, its not going to look great unless you know what your doing with it and the lighting is done well.

The majority.... nope. You could give Roger Deakins a 25 year old Hi 8 video cam and 90% of the people on this board an Alexa and his footage would smoke theirs.

Now this is something I would like to see, taking famous DP's and have them go head to head with some filmmakers who are no where as experienced and have them compete against each other. Would really show some people that its not hte camera but the person behind it.

I've been holding back saying this for a week now, but honestly, this is the only shootout that would prove any sort of point. That's the "shootout" I want to see.

Give some newcomers an Alexa, give the seasoned guys a 7D (being generous here). Let's see what happens.

And they both get a fully stocked grip truck. Can one's knowledge and skill overcome the other's technological advantage. I tend to think yes, pretty easily.

In the Zacuto test it was almost the opposite. The newer guys had the lesser cameras and were forced to really work their lighting. I agree I think it would be great if they switched where the young pups got the most expensive cameras.

the hardest part will be how much of experience the person have? I mean you cant just grab someone who makes home movies and give them an RED or Arri Alexa and think they would come anywhere close to a professional. Need the make the playing field a little more balanced on both sides.

The result of Zacuto's 2nd Revenge test means to me that, even with an audience of film & video professionals, dynamic range/latitude, color fidelity, and high resolution aren't always as important as many of us think or hope it is.

Extra latitude, accurate color, and higher resolution are often clearly useful, especially in post, but not an absolute requirement for many productions. Audiences, even audiences of industry pros, prefer 1080p24 video that looks like what Alexa, EPIC and GH2 produce.

I say that as someone who is waiting for his BMCC to arrive any day now ... ;-)

My guess is the audience liked the Alexa & EPIC footage for its overall wonderfulness, and the the GH2 footage mostly for its Panasonic color mojo and over-sharpened pop. Technically speaking, of course. ;-)

If the test allowed the cams that were able to shoot at >4K and projected it at >4K, the EPIC and the other 4K cams might have fared even better with that same audiences of pros. Maybe. But that's a different test.

Hmmm... new reality show? "Battle of the Cinematographers"? Someone get on it! Even if it's a web series, could be very interesting. It's obviously struck a chord with the (admittedly niche) crowd here.
