Did a lot of crazy stuff with the FS100

Hi guys,

Just finished a video for our youtube channel that was shot on our new FS100. We did a lot of slow motion, time ramping work, as well as a lot of post-stabilization on handheld shots.

There's also an abundance of VFX, as you can see. The footage is surprisingly flexible for grading. Also, we got to have our first experience with keying fs100 footage, and that was a breeze. The camera handled the low light environment fantastically, and I was able to color correct some heavily under-exposed shots.

I'm still working on figuring out a gamma curve that gives me good highlight protection and maximum dynamic range without necessitating a lot of tweaks in post to get the image looking good.

Regardless, 1080p60 plus the light sensitivity makes this an amazing camera, in my opinion.

Dude that was killer. Great job on the moves, ramping, and vfx. Would love to see some bts of how you pulled off some of those shots!

Also: did you shoot 60p the entire time so you could slow down any shot at will? Or did you have all of those ramps planned ahead of time?

That was great! I really enjoyed it. What lenses did you use? And please keep us updated on the gamma curve for maximum dynamic range and highlight protection. Have you tried the abel cine range PP?

Really amazing you guys! It just blows me away to see what these tools can do in the hands of talented people like yourselves.

We used Trapcode Form for most of the laser fx.

In regards to the ramping and smoothing, we shot a lot of stuff in 60p, and then stabilized it in AE CS5.5's Warp Stabilizer. After that, we used the timewarp filter, as it let us add motion blur to the parts where things needed to move really fast.

Not every ramped shot needed to be shot 60p, however. Since 60p makes the bumps become smooth swaying, warp stabilizer wouldn't always smooth out that motion, and we'd see it when things were sped up.

Also, we shot everything handheld using a fig rig!

Awesome! I happened to catch your Team Fortress video a week ago and really liked it (as I have spent a LOT of time playing that game all the way back to Quakeworld days).

We did the Modern War Gear Solid series, and we've just moved to the FS100 as well. We are REALLY liking it. One of the big things we notice is it has great red separation whereas on the 7D, our reds were getting lost with respect to detail.

I will definitely be sharing this with the rest of the guys I work with. Good job!

PS Do you guys attend DragonCon? We'll be there this year with our whole cast and crew.

Awesome! That shot of him raising the AK's at 0:54 was great. Reminded me of that shot in Being John Malkovich where they go through the portal and the new dimension is at a 90˚ angle from the previous.
