Dialing in the AF100

Hey Barry

Has anyone including your self got access to "graphical" representations of any of the settings in any of the scene files. eg Curves

The Panny Manuals have always just published vague largely un helpful descriptives of Scene settings and I have never ever seen any curves published.

Just wondering and hoping.

Curves are in the book and in one of these threads, Barry posted a PSD file with the curves in it as well.

I posted a graphic of the gamma curves here before; not exactly sure where it went to but I put up a PSD that's layered so you can look at each curve and compare it against any other.

I did a quick visual test of how the gamma settings goes from flattest to the one with most contrast:

Cine D
HD Norm
High
SD Norm
Low
B.Press
Cine V

Brilliant thanx. I will track it down.

(A psd hunt)

THE BOOK is not available to us Kiwis yet ...so thats not so helpful currently.

C'mon Barry!

Yes the banding is less when viewed on a HDSDI evaluation monitor. Even the footage from your NLE transferred from your card looks better on an evaluation monitor. But the best image is HDSDI direct out. This is why I think the NF will be of great use with this camera.

Here is my latest NanoFlash bracket rig:

Well done Olof. Good positioning of the nanoFlash and a good spot on the other side for wireless receivers and the like. Did you have an opportunity to bang off some nanoFlash footage along with the in camera test footage. Really curious. The banding should be non-existent on the nanoFlash or very close to it unless the blacks are filtered someway in the camera before the HD-SDI out or at least one would think.

These are my new settings I like in the AF100:

Film Cam
Detail Level -4
V Detail Level -4
Detail Coring -3
Chroma Level +2
Master Pedestal -2
Gamma HD NORM
Knee LOW
Matrix NORM2

If not noted then they are standard scene 6.

The photos below show the setup recorded to the internal SD card, Direct SDI out and to NanoFlash @ 100mb/s long gop.

I find that using the cine gammas produce too much noise or banding These settings are a compromise that I think will work in a lot of settings.

I think the difference in the NanoFlash and SDI out are pretty obvious, my conclusion is that this is a great cam and the NanoFlash will make it even better.

I will probably make adjustments to these settings as I shoot more but this will be my starting point. I intend to always grade my shots, so this is not a final grade at all, and bear in mind that this is ugly harsh lighting with a tortuous gradient in the back and some very bright highlights and dark areas. I meant to light this badly.

It is interesting to note that the file size on the png files of the SD card file is almost half the size of the SDI and NF files. This means there is a lot more information in those files.

Mike, yes I edited the post above. I am so used to calling them CF cards because I have never used SD cards in anything before. The NF uses CF and so does all my DSLR's. I wish the AF100 did too. Sorry about the typo.

Yes the coring is set to -3 in this setup. I spent a couple hours zooming in on different parts of the setup (with the camera viewing the output on my HD-SDI monitor) and testing every combination I could come up with. This is the best I have come up with so far. I was also carefully watching the scopes.

Bear in mind that the way it looks on a calibrated screen may be very different from how your computer shows the images.

Granted we're just looking at stills, but it still looks pretty clean. I haven't tried a negative coring yet. Everyone seems to be going +2 or thereabouts, so I'm curious to what kind of difference that makes.

I can't remember exactly what the change was but it had to do with banding. I basically tried different settings just looking at the HDSDI screen and not looking at the menu, sort of blindly changing the settings, until they looked the best on different parts then zooming out to see the whole scene, and not looking at the numbers until I was done.

Then I would change another setting and go back to all the options set them again. I used all 6 scene files to store my best combos and finally narrowed them down to this setting. This way I could A-F all the settings somewhat. I spent about 3 hrs on this.

I thought it was interesting that there is such a thing as negative coring. It probably means just mild coring.

There are literally thousands of combinations and I probably only looked at a few hundred. But I was also looking at trends.

Boy, I see far less banding with nanoflash/SDI out.

Everybody else see this too?

It is even more obvious watching video instead of looking at stills. But bear in mind that computer screens exaggerate the banding, it is still there on the HDSDI monitor but it does not jump at you.
