Dial in a specific color tempertaure

Is there a quick way of dialing in a specific color temperature? An example would be, after white balancing I get a 5200k color temperature. How can I quickly change it to a different temperature… let’s say 8500k?

I believe I read of a way where that I could assign a preset temperature. But that wouldn’t work because I don’t want to have to go in and change the preset to change the temperature each time.

Is there a faster way?

Thanks

I keep two sets of color temperature values, one for daylight, one for tungsten, in the A and B presets. Although I have to admit the Offsets for A & B are confusing, but they work and you have to do some experimenting to see how an offset value affects the original color temperature.
If you use Partial Direct Menus, it is possible to dial in the temperature value right from the LCD on-screen status and use the joystick to navigate to and raise/lower the value.

I use Partial but havn't seen I could do this, any chance of detailing this a bit more.

At present for WB changes I use Preset of a PP and change the white preset value in the PP. It works but using the direct menu would be better.

I see it no lonber works on the newer firmware. The original firmware back in February (before they fixed the backfocus tables) allowed one to dial in color temperature directly, but I see that no longer works with the newer firmware. So the only remaining option is to adjust, as you observed, in picture profiles now.

It might have in full direct mode? But from memory that limited a number of other options I didn' want to have to go through the direct menu for (like auto white or preset from memory).

It never worked this way!

But it jolly well SHOULD work that way! :)

If it can be done in the PP menu, it should be a straightforward patch to make this work in Direct Menu mode. It would provide a step up from the Z1's five steps between Tungsten and Daylight. Only barrier is Sony Marketing, I guess.

Agreed.

You can just press in the dial button when you're shooting(or I think you may have to stop recording can't remember) then a cursor comes over the white balance setting you see on EVF/LCD then quickly dial it in(incidently, you can chage a variey of other settings you see on screen this way ; that's if that's what you mean. You can set A + B in picture profile too, to do what you're after, like others have mentioned.

"Oh be still, my heart".

I can categorically state that with Version 1.05 of the EX1 firmware, clicking the wheel or the joystick and navigating to the White Balance, gives you the option of switching between AWB or the fixed setting.

It is increasingly obvious that previous versions probably allowed you to do just this: click and jog up and down to vary the WB colour temperature. But not with 1.05.

The ONLY way to do it is to

- Press the Picture Profile Button
- Scoot down to SET
- Scoot down to White (4 clicks)
- Scoot down to Preset White
- Scroll up and down in 500 K steps
- Hit PP again to exit in a hurry and start shooting

Now, with V1.05, the jog wheel isn't exactly accurate and can jiggle up and down in a Schrodinger's Cat kind of way, so it's not exactly the sort of thing you'd like to do under pressure (like trying to adjust when the sun goes in, or in a mixed Tungsten/Daylight exhibition hall, with no time to do a proper white balance).

I believe the accuracy is cured in further upgrades, but even then it's not a nice thing to do compared to the Z1's (2) and (3) buttons I set to do +K and -K.

And the really truly evil thing is that the EX1 controls show that it 'can do this', it just doesn't do it due to 'marketing'.

"Scroll up and down in 500 K steps"

I can do it in 100K steps and could with v1 and 1.11 firmware

"Oh be still, my heart".

This is what bugs me the most about the whole industry.
