DIABLO DIMES - Blast From The Past Music Video

the song is like a chopped and screwed country song

I like the dolly moves during the chorus. Are there any behind the scenes pictures?

First off, I loved the song. It was nice to see some video other than a bunch of young kids screaming. The lighting was perfect. The location was perfect. The camera movments were all very nice. It looks so beautiful that I don't even think it really needed a story line. I think it was one, if not the best video I have seen on this board. Great job!

Yeah man, that was awesome...I thought everything was great, including the song and I thought that guy did a great job too.

Excellent job:) I liked the location..back yard shed?
What did you use to shoot this and can you tell me a bit about the lighting you used. Thanks:)

Thank you very much for the feedback...We have been planning a video with Gio (his real name) for the last few months.

The major video was supposed to be shot on the Arri 435 with the hand crank motor. We had a techno crane planned and such. Well certain things got in the way and that shoot was moved until late October / early November. Now Diablo Dimes is playing for a month in NY...We needed to get something together to promote his tour so we shot this on the DVX-100A.

The location is a shed in the corner of a friends lot in Alpine California. For those of you that don't know or didn't get the style, Diablo is a man of a different generation. Here's a guy who's under 30 and is stuck in the era of silent films and boogie woogie blues. He has a very Robert Johnson, O' brother..., Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton, type of personality about him. He is truly a blast from the past. He can play the bad ass blues man - or the serious yet comdeic style of Buster Keaton. The best part about filming this guy is he already has the look, costumes, and the attitude. You just gotta point and shoot. Diablo Dimes has what it takes to be a star.

As for the lighting we had 2 mighty mole 2K's, 3 - 650's, and 2 - 4ft 4 bank kinos. I was going for a "Theatrical" & "Stage" type of feel. Diablo loves and embraces the Vaudeville Era - So the Shack became our Vaudeville stage and we lit accordingly. Most of the light is not motivated, but hey it looks great. Who says it has to be motivated 100% of the time anyways. I studied every Beyonce, Brittney, and Christina video for this shoot - The sole purpose for doing that was to emulate the way those artists stand out in their videos. After all music videos should be all about making the artist look their best and showing what they have to offer. It became a mix of cinematic, theatrical and television lighting techniques. Motivational lighting was far in the back of my mind.

Look for the video on CMT, MTV2, Yahoo Launch, Fuse, and VH1 in the up and coming months. If your in the NYC check out Diablo live. http://www.dirtyfeet.org/subterranean.htm
You can check for more information on Diablo by connecting to his official site through the www.mediamilitia.tv site.

Thanks again for the praise...Feel free to ask more questions. I will be happy to respond.

Hey I live in Alpine, I wish I had a shed like that.

Sweet Alpine is cool. No shed? Bummer!
His next video is going to be shot in Campo/Jacumba... Let just say its got something to do with trains!
The prosective shooting dates fall in late October or early November.
The plan is to shoot on 35mm.
If anyone in the greater San Diego wants to help out let us know.

Hi, I was the "director" on this little thing. Thanks for the feedback! Kevin and I and Miguel our columbian friend came together for the nite and put this thing together after a day of preproduction. It was pure improvisation freestyle filming. It was one of those special nights where you just truly enjoy making motion pictures and that remind you why we do what we do.
Next video is going to have some actual preparation but will follow the same vibe and style and it will involve old, real old trains.

Damn,
I wish you all could see this video off a DVD on a TV monitor. The internet version does nothing for the beauty of this video. It such a shame. For those that think the lighting looks good on the web version. I bet you would drool if you saw it on TV. I know I still am. @%$# Internet compression!

Absolutely loved the music! And I'm not just digging it, I'm buying it!

You really can't separate the video from the music. As the more spiritual among us would say, they have become "ONE". The artist is as natural as he is unique. First class job, guys!

So exactly what camera settings did you use to create this phenomenal look? And what other tips, apart from the superb lighting you described above, would you offer us to get this kind of organic and wholesome look?

Camera settings were very basic. 48 shutter speed. Pretty much factory settings on everything else. We were shooting at about 2.8
Key to the look was to shoot bright and low contrast, so you can bring it down and crush in it post. Its crucial if u want to crush the blacks and give the dvx its film look.
