sorry for the dumb question but what is a "red gel" ?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Color_gel
Primary red would be Lee #106 for example, but I'd say you need more something like a light red (Lee #182) or maybe Rosco Fire (this is a nice "burning" red color, I don't know the Rosco number right now).
Lee Filters has a pretty cool tool to chose gel colors: http://www.leefilters.com/lighting/products/colours/
This may be a bit advanced, but Fotokem recommends that if the scene is lit entirely with red light that you use purple light instead and time it red in post.
Shooting with only red light will produce soft images with film and video, and can create chroma bleeding problems in video.
By adding some blue light to the mix, you have some higher wavelengths to balance out the long red wavelength light, and preserve detail.
If this sounds at all confusing, just use a red gel.
I will be with rented equipment and a pressed timetable so there isn't enough time for testing !!4760 magenta should work. As always: test, test, test!
