16gb P2 Cards, Oh My!

rgdfilms

Wet poodle
Wind just broke about the 16GB P2 cards which we were promised would be due out this quarter.. Looks like Panasonic isn't going to push these out until February/March

Depressing indeed..

I was fed this information from a reputable source at AVS in San Diego who heard it from the horse's mouth..

Panny, what the hell?! You're eating your own foot..

I am so mad that I am seeing red

Old news buddy. Jan commented on these boards a while back that the 16 gigs wouldn't be out till next year. I understand it's frustrating for some. Personally, I only wanted them so the price of 4 gigers would drop more. I really like my little 4 gigers for easy DVD backup.

Yes, me too. I'd ratter have 2 4gb cards at, say, 199?

I guess there is no way they will meet their anticipated P2 chart graph thing where it said we would have 128GB cards by 2009? By then we will have the Panasonic XXX-666 TurboFlux cam though..

Who's selling the 4GB the cheapest nowadays?

EVS said $580

AVS said $525

Abel is $550

I want another one for $500 even..

These cards need to be secure. And it takes a long time until these Secure Digital cards are secure. :) This means, that Panasonic could build P2 cards from Unsecure Digital cards, but as the HVX is a secure Camera...Got it? :)

By the way: Did I tell you, that I am waiting for the following to replace my HVX?

"AVC-HD is the new format that Panasonic and Sony announced. Panasonic announced separately that they will support recording to SD cards as well as to the previously-announced recording on mini-DVDR discs. Sony has announced a couple of small consumer cameras that use the format but I don't believe either are available for sale yet."

No, someone else you know did. :)

Sure they will -- they're just going to release all capacities at the same time.

And the really great (but still secret) news is that by then they are all going to be only a dollar a gig!

(sorry, US models only).

Samsung stated earlier this year that the technoligical curve should allow flash media to double in capacity every 12 months (which is pretty fast). So according to that, if we get 16GB at the beginning of 2007, we should have 128GB by the beginning of 2010 (or maybe the end of 2009).

IF Sony, Canon, JVC or other professional camerabuilders (Thompson, Philips, BTS) wanted to build a memory-raidcard like the P2, they already did so. They don't. Not for the professional and prosumermarket. I think that today 99 % of television and video production is done without memorycards.

I think it is tape or harddiskrecording. But in the studio and broadcast stations, tapeless production and -distribution is going mainstream. (BTW testing memorycards is done by a full automatic process with software/computers, it is no big deal and done by all producers for highspeed cards)

This all will change the moment the raid-memorycards (P2) are competitive priced. And that offloading is on high speed, and backups can be made easy, fast and cheap.

3 4GB cards have been perfect for almost every scenario for me so far. If you have an assistant on-hand, two 4GB cards can keep you shooting without a break all day. If four-giggers fell to about $350, I would be pleased as punch. Who wants to sit around for a 16 or 32GB download?

I still think this is better though:

Oh, yeah... I totally did! And, if you think about it... you will know it is The Truth. The sad, undeniable truth.

Is that a Mini Disc?

(just kidding)

I'm not sure I understand what you are trying to say in your argument about P2 4GB/32GB offload times. If you shoot 30 minutes of HD on a 32GB card, and 30 minutes on eight 4GB cards, what's the download difference? The 32GB will actually be faster because you won't have the downtime while you switch cards (like you would for the 4GB cards). Plus it would be simpler to offload 1 card, instead of 8 cards (probably wouldn't even need a 2nd guy to offload the stuff for you). Also, there is no rule that you have to fill up an entire 32GB card before you can dump it.

Are you serious? Other brands do different things/solutions. You think there is no competition?

In the case of Thomson/Grass Valley, I assume you're aware of the Infinity? ( http://www.thomsongrassvalley.com/products/infinity/camcorder/ if not) Very much in evidence at IBC, if not shipping for a couple months more yet.

Best of all, it's solid state intra frame recording, at a fraction the cost of P2, as it uses Professional Grade Compact Flash, and that's already available in a 16GB size, with 32GB rumoured to be coming in the first half of 2007.

From What I heard for last two years of broken promise. THe speed is also one third of the P2 cards so is the price. The problem is the camera has to make apicture first to record on Compact flash. One thing to promise by sales and it is other for Engineers to actually create a working product. We will wait until they change there spec again.

Since Grass Valley only announced the idea of Infinity at IBC last year (Press release on 9 Sept 2005 - see http://www.thomsongrassvalley.com/news/2005/20050909-Infinity_Industry.html ), I don't see how they can have "broken promises" for two years........ ?

More like a quarter, both for speed and price. (166Mbs v 640Mbs for P2) But these are best possible case speeds for both, and in practice each is more than fast enough for real time recording of pro codec HD video. Also in practice, the theoretical speed advantage of P2 can almost never be really taken full advantage of - the download speed is normally severely limited by other factors in the chain.

And with CF so much cheaper, and available now at 16GB, the imperative for field downloading becomes much reduced anyway. It's also well fast enough to allow direct editing off the card (as is P2) which I know is essential for some users, and something XDCAM doesn't really allow.
One thing to promise by sales and it is other for Engineers to actually create a working product.
There were quite a few working products at IBC, though I'll agree it is still early days, and in general I'm reserving judgement on Infinity as a whole for the time being. But they have shown that the complexity (and price) of P2 for professional solid state videorecording is now no longer necessary, and that can't be taken away.

Yes I know that. :dankk2:But its not a raid-memorycard. (see my post http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?p=703077#post703077)
