DEUCE OF SPADES - Sound effects needed and other sound mixing related stuff

Hi Guys,

Some of you are already familiar with my feature period film DEUCE OF SPADES (see: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=160032 ).

As I enter final post production phase, I would like to keep a thread here to post my misc needs for help with sound effects and mixing / audio questions I may have. Looks like there are a lot of very cool, helpful, knowledgeable folks here and I will need your support to guide me through this final phase.

Here are some links to the film, including temporary teasers, behind the scene interviews, imdb listing etc... In my next post I will start asking for specific items I am missing to complete my scenes. Thank you for helping me complete this film!

Need sound effect for my crash scene

Need sound effect for my crash scene

Spent several hours surfing the net last night but could not find this:

Sound of a car hitting a sand bute (at high speed).

Imagine a roadster going about 100 mph and hitting the shoulder, which is loose dirt. It would make an impact sound (which I am currently lacking) and the dirt will fly up everywhere. I need to find sounds to support / complement these two visual images.

I did find a good sound to illustrate the belly of the roadster scrapping the bute as it goes airborn.

If anyone can help it would be very appreciated.

Need skid sound - on dirt road

Need skid sound - on dirt road

I also need the sound of roadster skidding a long way down a semi compact dirt road. I did my own folly but fast as I drove and skidded I only could produce so much sound. I used it, stretched it so it was as long as it could be (without sounding garbly) but it's not long enough. I would like to layer it with another skid, possibly a longer one.

Does anyone have such sound effect or know where to download it?

Again, whether you do effects recording or try to use FX library sounds, you need to think in layers. The crunch of the metal from the car hitting the dirt pile would be one. The sound of a heavy impact on dirt would be another. Dirt particles hitting the ground would be a third. That scrape of the belly of the car would be yet another. Take a bunch of different sounds and mix them together... you aren't going to find an effect that is as specific as you need.

And you may take your effects recording of the skid and use it as a base layer, then add some other fun things on top of it to give it that bigger-than-life sound that you're after.

Just remember... you aren't just dealing with tires and dirt. You also have metal and glass to think about... and even upholstry. There are lots of sound textures to recreate here.

Once you have either recorded or downloaded the FX that you want, you can also Foley in some stuff to picture at home to add the little details that are missing.

Hi C2V, thanks for the input / advice... Yes, that is already what I am doing, glad to see I am on the right track... But I need the sound files to create the layers in question. I am hoping someone here might have something I can use or know where to find it on the net. I spent a lot of time looking yesterday but found nothing. It was frustrating, especially when I have so much work ahead of me editing all these scenes and a deadline coming at me at the speed of light

Ouch.

Any help appreciated!

I just did a quick search (literally about 30 seconds of work) on soundsnap.com and found some great metal crunches (one called "junk crash" that was very nice) as well as some great dirt sounds... dirt thuds, dirt debris, dirt road, etc.

First off since you will be posting a lot it's Foley with a capital and you were recording FX not Foley, unless you were skidding on a stage to picture.

Now to the Q. I'm assuming they didn't manage to do this in production either. If they did you should ask them how. You will probably need to do it in stages. What you have is probably fine for the start and the stop, what you need to make is the middle. Stretching isn't going to sound good. You need to put together some tire slide on dirt and gravel maybe some bumping and suspension sounds. Maybe a nice gas in the tank slosh when it finally stops. This is gravel so no tire screeches. If you do want to try it "life" your going to want to be going down hill on the right kind of surface (in a SAFE location, no cliffs near by etc. Get going start slow and work you way up great speed is not nec needed. Set up to record the rear wheels and go into the skid using the hand break. That will lock up the rear wheels but you still can steer if your carful and you avoid the ABS and it's a lot easier to get two wheels to skid for awhile than it is to get four.

now BIG WARNING. This is inherently DANGEROUS. You are essentially hydroplaning on dirt. You will NOT have good control over direction etc and you might start sliding at an angle so if you don't know how to drive like this DON'T do it. I'm serious you can get killed or kill someone else. And it's probably illegal. If you know someone who does formula D racing they might be a good choice since they are used to this kind of driving. Also it's better if you don't have engine noise BUT if your car has power assist anything DO NOT kill the motor, you will loose the steering AND the breaks.

A much safer way is to do this with a mountain bike, then pitch it down a bit. I've done both. Don't do either with out a second person around. Your in LA if you put a notice in CL you will probably get lots of hits from folks who have some stunt driving experience, I would use them.

When we needed a bunch of this stuff we did a lot of car work but a lot of what we ended up using was the bicycle because of motor noise.

And as others said layers, layers, layers.

Sounds promising! I had never heard of that site before, so I checked it out and signed up. Will search it when I go home in a moment.

What keywords did you use to find the above mentionned sounds?

I stand corrected on both counts :)

Well... What's the fun in that? :)

Well, the roadster does not have power brakes, nor power assist, nor ABS, no hand brake, heck it barely has brakes period LOL. But I can't think of a good, straight downhill dirt road in my area to try this on. And I would never ask anyone else to do it but me. So maybe you're right, maybe a dirt bike is a better way to go...

Thank you for the input! :dankk2:

What keywords did you use to find the above mentionned sounds?

The above-mentioned sounds were the key words. Search "metal" or "gravel" or "dirt" or "glass" to find some great stuff. And you can refine the search by adding "crash," "crunch," "hit," "thud," or "debris."
