FEATURE: DEUCE OF SPADES - How I made a period full feature film all by myself on ZERO budget

I received this private message and thought I'd answer it on the thread so that others can benefit from info:

<<Hi. I've been reading your thread on Deuces of Spades for a while now. Congratulations on such an amazing feat. I'm doing somewhat of the same thing. And you have given me hope that it can be done. I've been moving pretty steadily on my project. I'm wearing many hats just as you did on your film. My biggest hurdle right now is trying to determine what kind of lighting I need. How did you go about determining this for your shoot? Did you go to the locations ahead of time and do test shots and such with the available light, and then added lighting as needed?>>

Because I owned all my gear it was a little easier for me to handle above. I also had additional ights on loan from a large company, who's owner was supportive of my hot rod film. I have had these lights in my possession for two years now and will be returning them after I am done with my last CGI pick up shoot in a few weeks. It was a great blessing.

So now let's answer your question. Since I owned the lights or had them at hand (not rentals) I would basically pack everything I thought I would need for each shoot. Depending on whether it was an interior or exterior shoot I would pack differently and if it was a night shoot it was a little different too. When shooting run and gun on streets, I oftentimes packed nothing at all because I was trying to not attract attention to myself. For those shoots, i would, if possible scout the locatin ahead of time to determine the best time to shoot there and figure out the light situation, since I would not be able to alter it, having no gear at hand for the run and gun shoots.

Keep in mind that for run and gun shoots, you may have to pick the time that is less likely to lead to hassle, so usually super early on a Sunday morning for exemple. Even if that is not going to yield the best possible lighting situation. This is because in the case of run and gun the main goal is to Shoot without disturbing anyone (traffic, public, etc) and get out quickly.

Now for the less stressful shoots LOL, like indoors or controlled exterior shoots (shot at private property with permission of owner) then you can take your time to plan.

Scouting a location ahead of time is always the best way to go but not always an option. Location might be far or you are too darn busy wearing 2000 hats to make that extra trip.

I always packed:

My Lowell travel light set (2 OMNI 500K with frame and gels)
My 3 X 1K fresnels loaners
If exterior night shoot I borrowed a 1.3K HMI light which I now SWEAR by.

As you can see all above is ridiculously small Wattage and small light set up, because of total lack of budget / funds. Yet, it produced very nice results. Some of my best scenes were shot with ONE 1K light. And it worked because of the concept and creativity of the lighting concept for that specific scene. (Jail scene is a very good exemple of this)

I also packed:

3 large bins filled with grip stuff: One filled with extention cords etc. One filled with C47, gels, gaffer tape, cinefoil, spare bulbs, clamps etc etc. A third one filled with accent light bought at Home depot. This included a couple garage hallogen lights which came handy many times (add a blue gel and you are in business).

I then also grabbed:

A couple C-Stands and SAND BAGS (a must)
A 5 way bounce (very very useful)
A collapsable large frame with flags (one black and one diffuser)
Cinefoil (give me a roll of cinefoil and a roll of Gaffer tape and I will rebuild the universe HA!)
A FIRE ESTINGUISHER (a BIG must)

I think that's about it. With above I always had what I needed to light just about anything.

When shooting outdoors in the wild you also need a generator. I was lucky enough to own a HONDA 2000 super quiet little guy (from my camping days) and it saved the day (or night) MANY MANY times. Getting clean sound, of course becomes an issue, but with some sound blanckets and a car parked in front of generator plus super long extention cords (be careful about resistance though) I found I was in amost cases OK.

I hope the above is helpful to you guys and if you have more specific questions please ask.

below: A one light set up can produce beautiful results:

WEEEEEEEEEEE HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

The official DEUCE OF SPADES online store has open.

http://www.deuceofspadesmovie.com/online_store.htm

WAY COOL.

I worked on it SO HARD for the past 10 days. After I got royally SCREWED by Paypal, I decided it was time to get serious and do it the right way. I am now set-up with a REAL merchant account and can take credit cards anywhere I am in the world, with only a cell phone needed. An awesome feature and added benefit to setting it up officially. And the new online store kicks ass. No need to sign up with Paypal to be able to buy from me either hehehehe. I'm loving it!! And Paypal will never get to hold my DVD sales money and refuse to give it to me - EVER AGAIN. (yeah, they're STILL sitting on my funds)

Wish me luck!!

Oh and go check out some of the cool merch my supporters in Florida made for me, some neat stuff.

Hopefully now I can go back to editing my film?????? GRRRRR - LOL.

Below : a cool graphic I created for my online store page:

Faith,

You are officially the

TOP GIRL DOG

of this forum! oh, yeah, baby, you rock!

I hope you are well and still rocking it out!

Just watched one of the trailers....all I can say is your shot design is phenomenal. Incredible job here. It absolutely looks "Hollywood!"

I've never posted in this thread. It's huge.

I also checked out the trailer on IMDb. Very impressive, from the cars, to the clothes, etc. There is also some nice dialogue. "If my mom sees you, she'll have a cow." Haha.

Nice, very nice!

Great stuff Faith, just ordered and everything worked great!

Oh way cool THANK YOU :) - yeah so far teh cart is workig wonderfully well. Shoots me a nice invoice everytinme someone orders, keeps track of everything etc... It's not liking Norway fabs though LOL and keeps rejecting their orders. I think it is an address format issue - will call cart company today to figure this out. So far I am very happy with this upgrade. :2vrolijk_08:

GRRRRRR WOOF! yeah, my bite is a lot worse than my bark LOL.

Credits go to HOLYWOOD CAMERA MOVES DVD series. A little gem, well worth the few hundred bucks I spent on it!!! I leaned alot from that DvD and then watching top films carefully and disecting them.

yeah uh huh... They all say that ;) LOLOL

Nice, very nice!

the flashback dialogues are very cool, I had four old timers sit down and read my dialogues and double check all the slang :) and they added a few of their own that are out of this world:

"What is this , a set-up? You guys ass hole budies???"

and

"Don't waste your time on her Johnny, she's tight" (tight = virgin)

or even:

"Check out the gate on that rig!"

I could have never come up with this stuff on my own, it had to be an old timer who lived the era and remembered what they said back then. Way cool.

Faith, following your suggestion! O-mazing job. I hope to be able to do half of what you have done.

I was wondering, how did you handle feeding everyone during your shoots. I know you mentioned you had nearly no budget. In my number crunching, and figuring of my own budget. I noticed that a large majority of my budget won't even be going to the actual production.. but for FOOD. Now, recently I've had the president of the chamber of commerce whom is working with us who has said she would probably be able to get the local restaurants to sponsor us with food on the days we shoot.. but thats still up in the air..

How did you feed your crew/actors? If you did?

Hi Faith,

Over the past three days I've discovered this topic by accident (I'm usually just randomly reading topics at dvxusers, creativeCOWs, Panasonic 3CCd user-forum and so forth). I read all of it, from the first post to most recent one. Very addictive. :)

You did and are doing an inspirational job. (Of course I'll buy the DVD.) (edit: just bought it!)

Funny thing: I am working on four short video's at the same time (and I really would like to finnish them all and go on to new/next projects) and just before I found this thread I came to the conclusion that I should be aiming higher: straight to feature lenght. Then I got frustrated again, because my dayjob is a huge obstacle there. But I can't remove that obstacle. Reading the 890 posts in this thread (and almost everything around it) puts me back on track: having fun finnishing the short ones and writing the next, bigger one. Keeping the dayjob and far feeling less frustrated :).

Thank you!

Jasper

Yes, I am afraid there is no escaping feeding actors and crew, especially when they are all working for FREE. So whether you have money or not, you GOT to FEED your people. This is very expensive. came out to be about $500 to $1,000 a month every month I was in production. I fed everyone for a year and a half while filming. Towards the end I ran out of money completely, so my good friend and production Assistant jerry fed us. he is an Angel.

the main thing here is to be smart when it comes to food and what you buy and where. the cheapest way to feed our team was either Subway sandwhiches (buying the foot long sandwhich and then cutting them in half = 2 sadnwiches = 2 peopel fed). we also did , on small shoots, Chinese food, that's pretty cheap to if you only have say 2 actors and 2 crew people. I also did Boston Market and would buy thei chicken meal - it fed up to 6 / 7 people for only $25. Ralphs was another good deal: One entire chicken + 1 entire bread + 2 side salads for only $9 :) !!!!!!!!!!

We ate a lot of ralphs chicken while filming LOL.

Sometimes we had to feed people twice a day. On occasion 3 times. Usually just one time a day (lunch) though.

Yeah, so basically food will make you go broke. In my case I was also faced with high gas bills to tow my travel trtailer to the week-end on location camping sites and to feed my hotrod. That summer gas went up to almost $5 a gallon - IT KILLED ME.

My deuce only does 10 miles / gallon and so does my Tundra when it is towing.

OUCH X 2.

Hey, glad I could inspire you to aim for your dream. I'd be lying if I said this is going to be an easy road for you. It is very difficult, risky, extremely taxing and can at time feels like a cross between having labotomy and giving birth... or maybe giving birth WHILE having a labotomy?? LOL

Even now with the feature in the last stages of completion I find myself struggling on a daily basis... There a GOOOOD days and then there are less good days (like last 10 days for exemple, when I had to deal with paypal refusing to give me my DVD purchase money - they are STILL sitting on the funds, forcing me to refund everybody). It is at time like these that you curse the day you decided to make a film LOL... but then you solve the problem and soon forget the laboring pain and are left with the REWARD: the incredible feeling that you did something amazing, worthy, and are, in some way, venturing where no man has been before LOL - well sorta. A few have gone but I am not sure they actually survived to tell the tales LOL...

I guess you get the point :).

Faith:

Why is PayPal trying to hose you on your DVD sales? Might be a good cautionary tale for the others on this thread who are contemplating selling their own DVDs.

Thanks,

Dan

I think it means they are holding her money, I just had it happen, $20k pay pal is holding from me due to their new policy, previous to the policy it was never an issue.

I miss the old pay pal policy, to many crooks abused the system and it's no longer the business tool it once was IMO.

MAY OTHERS LEARN FROM MY ORDEAL.

Well basically under new policies Paypal does not allow anyone to see a product unless they are shipping it within 20 days.

This is very restrictive to people who are for exemple, making custom products, such as furniture or clothes etc... What if you can't make a custom table in 20 days?

But this is not so much what I have a HUGE PROBLEM with. In the end it is a free country and Paypal has the right to have any which policy they darn please. For example if they want to allow only the sales of WHITE POLKADOT items, then that's fine by me... But for ALL LONG AS THEY TELL ME THAT WHEN I CALL THEM AND TAKE THE TIME TO PERSONALLY TALK TO TWO REPS ABOUT MY NEW ACCOUNT AND EXPLAIN IN GREAT LENGTH WHAT I AM ABOUT TO SELL TO THEM.

You think either of the two Paypal reps could have, possibly, mentionned, (even in just in passing) that paypal (now) no longer allows advanced sales?

You think???

NO. :furious3:

They let me open my account, set up my cart, create my webpage, accounce it on the net, receive orders for about 10 days (200 people) and THEN they simply shut down my account and freeze all my funds. that is INCLUDING MY DONATION FUNDS (which, incidentally, have nothing to do with advance sales).

So I call them and explain what is going on. I explain this is not a scam and people are wanting to buy the advance DVD and well aware they will not get it until film is released. I encouraged Paypal to investigate by contacting my buyers, so they can see forthemselves that the buyers are very OK with this.

Oh but NO. They didn't want to look into it. The "nice" rep on the phone said: "No, you will just have to refund ALL your buyers. This is your only option."

So then I mentionned to him none of his reps warned me that I could not sell advanced DVD when I explained in length to them I am a filmmaker, my film is about to be released and I am to sell advance personalized copies that will not be shipped until probably January etc etc...

His nonchalent reply? : "Oh well, I was not there to hear what was the conversation so I can't tell you"

 real pro attitude.

So goodbye Paypal. Hello pro shopping cart.

PS: Currently, I have started the long, grueling process of refunding my people. This is very time consumming, the paypal website is VERY slow so I suspect I will be at it all week.

The good news is, though, that my supporters got my back and they all are turning around and immediately re-ordering the DVD with the new cart.

PLUS they are, in many cases, also adding additional merch and donations to give me a little extra push.

I must confess that this kind of amazing support has made me feel pretty touched and borderline emotional yesterday as I read their emails and felt THE LOVE... I got quite a bit choked up...

Meanwhile, thanks to Paypal I am now 2 weeks behind with my editing and stressed beyond description.

But to quote my favorite person in the world:

"I'LL BE JUST FINE!"
