FEATURE: DEUCE OF SPADES - How I made a period full feature film all by myself on ZERO budget

Great work, Faith. I just love those vintage dragsters. It looks just like I remember them when I was a kid drawing pictures of them in study hall...

A Studebaker...wow...

And that's a really nice shot of you at the end.

Oh yes, I do like that shot of me, it was an outtake, the wind kept blowing my hair in my face so i told Stacey to CUT! and was laughing at our bad luck with the wind LOL - so it is very genuine and that's why it looks cool.

Hey Faith,

The stills look great and says something about the quality of your focus with the adapter. Keep it up!

Todd

Considering how fast the action was going and that I had but 1 second to pull focus and shoot before the cars took off, it is a wonder ANY of these stills are in focus . It's not like they were posing for me or waiting for my focus to be on...

Boy oh boy...

Oh and I forgot to mention: I coudl not see s*** in my monitor, the sun was full on and it was very hard to see the screen... hard to gauge focus altogether...

Glad you like it!

here are a few more grabs:

I got lucky with the blue color scheme on that one, it just sorta 'happened'.

Love the red flames and straight pipes exhausts on the right dragster!

SCREENGRABS%20Scene%202009%2015%20%2029.jpg

This car was really bad a**

SCREENGRABS%20Scene%202009%2015%20%2030.jpg

That dragster was way too fast for my limited 120 speed: But still looks cool:

SCREENGRABS%20Scene%202009%2015%20%2022.jpg

This one almost ran my gear over when it took too short of a turn past me. :0 but hey, I got a cool shot out of it!! hehehehe...

SCREENGRABS%20Scene%202009%2015%20%2011.jpg

I kept wondering what would happen if one of those engine just blew up in a million pieces at launch... And a chunk of it was to hit me in the head , since I was stadning a merer 5 feet away. Fortunately, I did not have to find out.

SCREENGRABS%20Scene%202009%2015%20%2026.jpg

Meanwhile, the hotrod girl, sitting on the bleachers, is thinking about the mysterious letter and the chain and ring she found in it... Alone, amidst the crowd. Why the sky is not blown remains a mystery, it was full sun and about 3PM. Go figure.

You're an exceptional visual talent, Faith. And a marketing dream. Just such an interesting story as a DIY filmmaker. The trailer I watched was astonishingly beautiful. Very authentic and it looked as good as anything I've seen from Spielberg's period films. Wow. That's all I can say. You should go kick Diablo Cody's and Spielberg's ass at the same time.

Can I quote you? Can I? Can I ?? :D

Well right now the only ass that's getting kicked is mine. I'm pretty tired and all thsi hard work is taking its toll on my health, but like Johnny always said: "I'll be just fine!"

Oh here is one more grab I just found. Same shot but with face in the sun when I look up during the shot.

NEXT SHOOT:

Now we wait for the downpour that is supoosed to arrive wednesday - thru friday.. I'll be filming in the rain for the second time, problem is, this time i will be IN the rain myself and driving with my jalopy in the rain is going to be entertaining, since it has no top, no windows and no windshield. Let's hope I don't catch my death.

RATS.

I will be filming at this TREE, which is a key element in the film. I used this location in my first project (THE PARK BENCH a practice 35 min short). The storm sequence and time lapse will also be incorporated into my feature film now. It promises to look quite dramatic.

Ok Guys, I am now iin communication with the PRO CONVERT software people and waiting to hear from their top specialist, who is located in LA :). I will keep you posted as to what I find out.

Another shoot under my belt. Rain was on the forecast, but of course, no rain did fall. I scouted the location and got my cinematographic bearings the day before, which was supposed to be "cloudy and no rain" and of course, got RAINED ON. I was alone. I saved the gear but I got drenched :).

I noticed you can't really "see" rain from the camera's eye unless it is a huge downpour. So maybe my idea will not work afterall.

PLAN B :) - Storm hits firts, THEN girl goes to visit the fateful tree.

So we got the roadster wet, worked with overcast weather, no sunshine. I think it will work good.

Had ZERO crew. :( Being in front of the camera AND behind it at the same time is ONE thing I have NOT figured out (yet).

HA!

The roadster, parked by the side of the road, stopped traffic. Some people got out and took photos, others asked questions... Now we know who the real star of the film is ;).

I was lucky my lead man Tim McReynold joined me and so did my P.A Jerry Mull. I ended up having Tim do the opening shot, which included a pan up / reveal. I knew he would nail it and he sure did. he had never done this before but I think he has it. Jerry was thrown behind the camera too for another shot that required a fast rack focus. He nailed it too.

I set up my own shots using jerry as a stand in and then rolled and slipped in front of the camera, since those were stationary shots, it worked fine.

I am currently trying to line up more volunteers shooters to help me with my scenes. If anyone here is interested in landing a hand, PM me please. I sure could use the help!!!

hey Matt, thank you man! I see you are from Fresno. So is "FRESNO" (Tony Crosciato), the challenger in the film. We even make mention of "raisin city" which was Fresno's own dragstrip back in the days.

Anywhoo, My assistant jerry just emailed me some shots of me behind the scenes yesterday. I thought I'd share them with you so you can "visualize" where and how I spent my evening last night: (note the lack of microphone. This scene is completely silent - images and music only)

Below: Yes, I'll have to agree I am a strange bird. Part hotrodder, part filmmaker. This shot is a riot!
here using Tim to gauge my shot.

Below: the tables are turned. This time Tim is behind the camera and me in front. It's funny to hear HIM say My magic words: "Rolling ! ACTION!"

2009%20TREE%20scene%20BTS%202.jpg

The deuce is stopping traffic. Some people even get out of their cars and start snapping photos.

2009%20TREE%20scene%20BTS%203.jpg

I love this shot!!! It says it all. You can even see where Johnny's deuce hit the tree, fifty years ago.

2009%20TREE%20scene%20BTS%205.jpg

Don't talk to me: I'm busy.

2009%20TREE%20scene%20BTS%206.jpg

Why do I always look so darn serious when I am filming? I'm in my zone: EXTREMELY focussed.

Love the new behind the scenes videos you posted on YouTube...I shared them with a few folks!

The track photographer last Saturday snapped some candid shots of me working alone and battling sun glare, which yielded the really cute photos below! I'll share a couple more later. Below, you can see my Porta Brace and Petrol bags which I had to haul across the race track by myself, along with my tripod.

hey guys, I need your eyes and advice here.

We didn't get the very overcast weather promised when we filmed at the tree. Went back there 3 times. Last time ranger asked us to leave. Turned out to be land owned by DWP - no signs, we had no idea. He was nice though and let us finish our shoot :). Meanwhile the sky in my footage is kinda blown. I can't go back to reshoot. Take a look at the shots and let me know if it bothers you, or whether I should not worry about it. I played with contrast and brightness some and it helped a bit. Maybe some of you can give me tips on how to fix it further?

Hi Faith check out what magic bullet looks can do to your sky, have a look at www.philipbloom.co.uk phil has recently done a little tutorial on MBL and the before and after is stunning. Hope it helps, your doing a fantastic job by the way.

When they filmed the singing in the rain for the famous rain/wet scene they mixed milk with the water so it could be seen on film.

Is Magic Bullet Looks the same as "Magic Bullet". I got MB, it was a promo with camera purchase , but i have not installed it yet and have never looked at it's screen shots / functions etc...

It's just... I've been KINDA busy? :D

I'm gonna watch the tutorial tonight.

Does anyone else care to give their opinion on my blown sky in the above shots?

Et voila!

Can you live with something like that?

Frank
