Detached Switch

Hello - Long-time reader, first-time poster...

I'm waist deep in a documentary, and one of the DVX cameras I rented for a shoot lately arrived broken. Specifically, the on/off/record slider switch that you use with your thumb detached and was loose in the case.

I went through the shoot just placing the switch where it should go, sliding it as necessary, and hitting record when I had to - then putting the piece in my pocket where I wouldn't lose it later.

My question is: how can I reattach it? I pressed it tightly back, but it won't lock in and I didn't want to force it.

I know this isn't my 'fault' per se, but if I can fix it without incident that would be preferable to getting into a 'it was like that when I got it' argument with who I rented the rig from.

Thanks very much. I searched for this topic and didn't find it.

Hmm...bummer man. Sorry, I have no idea. Good lesson here is to check all your rental gear before you take it. Turn it on, check for scratches/damage, etc.

Ooops, didn't catch that it was shipped! Perhaps Rush from EVS could shed some light on how cases like this are usually dealt with....unless of course...umm, well good luck.:)

Hi Patrick, that is some rough luck there man. That is the very reason I stopped shipping rentals, too many issues like that, he said/she said, problems with shipping etc. We are a pickup-only rental house now, so that we can inspect the camera before pickup and after arrival.

My main question is, how was the DVX packed for the rental. Of all the DVX's I have sold and rented out, I have never seen that switch come off, neither in shipping (new or rental) or through usage. It leads me to believe, that if the DVX was packed properly, then it was broken before it shipped, and someone had wedged it back on and shipped it to you anyhow. There are so many things that will break on a DVX before that does, because it is not exposed. I would say, be honest as always, call the guy, and say, "Hey man, the DVX you sent me had a broken selector switch, what do you want me to do with it, just throw it back in the box?" His reaction determines the case at hand, and he may say, "Oh yeah sorry about that, just throw it in there."

Thanks for your replies.

To clarify, I rented the unit from a friend, so it makes things a little more interesting. I'd rather fix the camera than get into an argument over equipment with a friend.

Looking at the switch, it appears as though there are two 90* clasps on the inside, that if pressed into the opening enough would grab and attach for good - I just can't seem to make it do that. I've tried but there's no way to access the back of this area as well through the tapewell either.

It's a sturdy camera, but there has to be someone out there who has had a similar problem. Anyone else have any advice?
