Desperation - Andrew Kang

Hmm, with your explanations, much of my perception of the film changes. Thanks for the long explanation.

I just finished a feature on organ trade, and never once picked up that is what this film is about. not sure why.

I'm going to watch this again.

Sup Andrew,

Just peeped your film. There was something about your film that made it interesting for me. Few things didnt work for me, but I think you were definitely on to something. I just think the story couldve been more polished/clear.

There were some great shots like the first and last shot. The set did leave something to be desired. The lead was a little too hardcore with the facial expressions at certain points. I couldnt tell if he was just enraged or he was trying to get her to respect his gangsta. I did like his delivery of much of the phone conversation. Though I didnt always know exactly what he was talking about.

I've never stabbed anyone before but I was saying to myself "damn that girl can seriously take knife!" Maybe if she was less consistent with the fighting back as if shes actually feeling pain from all those stabs? She got like 10 stabs before it seemed to slow her down at all. Also, maybe if you used some sound fx for the stabbing? Felt like silent film at some points. As violent as it looked visually, the audio didnt represent the same kind of brutality. Her screams helped though and seemed realistic.

Anyways, you already mention much of your motivation in the above post.

Aram and I would be hypocrites to make any comments on F-bomb usage :)

Congrats on your film. Good work.

Your film has a good thrill and I like the atmosphere, but I don't like that the violence in the beginning scene is visible. Unfortunately I didn't understand the story although it seemed to me an intelligent story. The acting was very good. Compliments.

First too much swearing. I know I critique these films and every time someone says fook I complain, because it should be shocking and should be used sparingly to call attention to it. What are you calling attention to when you say we're gonna mutherfooking do this, and we're gonna get that fooking that and fook fook... it's distracting and it can drive some people away from the story.

Kudos to casting an Asian lead. I love it. I wish there were more parts for them.

I loved the stabbing scene because specifically she fought back. I dislike the whole hollywood, one stab to the gut and they go bug eyed and fall over cliche. It was a nasty and personal fight where he basically decimated her liver over his brother or something.

I liked both of their performances, I wish you had done more with the camera and lighting to seperate them from each other. You could have really punched it up by changing the angles between them.

Your cutting needs to be tighter, seems like you cut late.

finally and most importantly-
show not tell. most of your exposition was a phone conversation where they are cursing every other word. It's just really hard to get the story. You should find more creative ways to show us whats happening. Like him stabbing only her liver.... we clued in on that. It was a personal and specific and vengeful attack. We all knew she did something to his family just by that scene, in our subconscious. My thoughts after that was... what did this ***** do to his family?

Anyway... I love your take, and your gritty subject matter. I look forward to seeing more of your work.

Andrew, I really enjoyed your flick. I liked the characters, the lighting, premise of stolen body parts, and even the music seemed to work with the film.

I’m not sure I entirely followed the dialog on the phone. I was getting confused on who was going to do what, and who was talking to whom or why the girl was even stabbed. (which, some more sound FX and whimpers from the girl would have sold the scene. I’m not sure what an actual stabbing would sound like, or perhaps one would be in so much shock not to make a sound?) This will probably one of those films I’ll watch again to get a better understanding of what just happened. Of course, I’ll have to scour through the other comments and perhaps find out more there.

Looking forward to your next entry and congrats on entering.

i was bored with all the 'F' words and lost total interest in this short, I'm afraid. I might watch it again, but.........
