Hi all, been reading here for months, totally addicted to the hype and buzz surrounding HVX 200.
Have a gig starting mid Feb which will involve lots of doco style shooting and need a new camera for it. I was planning on purchasing HVX and shooting DVCPRO 50 but that looks extremely unlikely to effing impossible seeing as I am in Pal land.
I've always used Sony gear but have become besotted to the mojo of the Panny...I would geta DVX 100 in a heartbeat but need to shoot 16:9 and it seems that serious compromises are involved there....can anyone tell me that it will be alright to shoot squeeze mode on a DVX or that the anamorphic adapter isn't a pain in the arse...or do I need to consider XL2 or FX 1.....I really don't need HD at this stage but would love to get the HVX just for 16:9 DVCPRO 50.....any tiny little chance we might see Pal HVX's in the next two weeks hahahahahahahahahah

If you're shooting DV/16:9, a DVX in Squeeze mode/25P will give you just as much res as an FX1. The XL2 will be higher res.

Thing is, for display on an interlaced television, all interlaced cameras employ a low-pass vertical blur process to reduce "twitter" -- interline flicker due to thin lines displaying on one field but not the other. That lowers resolution; in NTSC, most interlaced cameras max out at about 360 lines. Well, that's about the same performance you get out of a DVX/progressive/squeeze system. So if you want to shoot for the filmlike look, a DVX/25p/THIN shot will look just as sharp as an FX1/CF25 in DV mode (obviously we're not talking about HD here!)

In interlaced it's not that way; the FX1 and XL2 will hold a noticeable edge over the DVX when in 16:9 interlaced 50i. But in progressive the DVX will match the FX1 toe-to-toe in DV 16:9. The XL2 can be notably higher than both of them. You run the risk of getting twitter because of the high res, but you can always filter that out in post if necessary.

Wow, a response from Barry Green to my first ever post in an internet forum...I feel like I just won the lottery. Thanks for the advice Barry, as always I feel almost guilty I haven't had to hand over any cash for such expert knowledge.
So, as a plan A...buy DVX 100B (does anyone have opinion on Expandore from Singapore with Mack warranty?) pump this project through and a couple of other paying gigs then sell and purchase HVX when it finally shows down under....maintaining existing DV workflow for a while and see what happens when the dust settles re: p2 and workflow requirements.
I keep fretting about the lack of true 16:9 chips on the DVX but then PD 150/170
doesn't have them either (Does it?) and that doesn't seem to have been an impediment.
I don't give a toss about the resolution chart tests for HVX by the way. For my purposes the camera is totally worth it for 16:9 DVCPRO 50 alone. Do others feel this way?
