Desktop LCD Monitors

I've been looking around for an LCD monitor specifically for desktop editing. I was thinking somewhere around the lines of Dell's 2001FP and the Samsung 213T (~20" of monitor). Everyone's telling me to get the Mac Cinema HD LCD but it's way to expensive (but wayyy sexy)...plus as a PC owner, i would be betraying my equipment...jk ;D Any input would be appreciated. I'm kind of getting tired of this 60 pound bohemoth taking up all my desk space >:(

Re: Desktop LCD Monitors

The 2001FP monitor is great for editing. I wish I have enuff desktop space for two of those though. :P

I was in the market for a Cinema HD... almost made the jump to get it, then the Dell came down in price for a week, at $750. I was too good of a deal to pass up. Two of these babies still costs less than the Cinema, and you'd get insane desktop space. Oh and the 2001FP has 4 inputs you can select via a button on the front. D-Sub, DVI, Composite, S-Video. What more can you ask for?

Re: Desktop LCD Monitors

Is is of course more ghosting than a CRT monitor. But I've been using a KDS 15" LCD for the past 3 years so i'm used to LCD ghosting... it's definitely usable though..

Re: Desktop LCD Monitors

I'm currently typing on a computer I built connected to 4 of the Dell 19" LCD monitors (1901FP). I'm not much of a gamer, but I'm told that ghosting would be an issue for games (as most LCDs are), but for video/graphics work, it's jelly (no ghosting whatsoever). Whatever your choice, I would highly recommend an LCD with a thin bezel (border around the actual LCD screen), as it takes up less space, makes the screen seem bigger, and helps you focus on the work on-screen IMHO.

Re: Desktop LCD Monitors

So DELL is actually the BEST editing LCD money can buy for the money (for PC users)?!  wow, i am actually a bit shocked at that...

My wife does graphic design and I had the great idea to buy her (what I thought was) a kickass 19" viewsonic LCD because i like the 19" CRT by them we've used for a few years now.

well it looked great but when she plugged it in she jumped right into a file with like a spherical gradient blur/fill to test it and it was just one big smear.  horrid.  that thing would have cost me i think $800 after some rebates at best buy.

anyhow so this is a big issue for me as well.  i would REALLY love to replace that giant mount of screen on our desktop!  i have no idea who makes a great LCD for design and editing.  so DELL is shocking.   any others?

Re: Desktop LCD Monitors

Yeah go figure, Dell actually makes something decent  :P

I wish somebody had some experience with the samsung and the dell. I hear the samsung has more vibrant colors and brightness, however the response time is slower than the Dell (25ms vs. 16ms) AND it's like 400-500 bucks more expensive. I've seen the samsung and it is a beauty to behold, i just need to see the dell now  :-/

here's the review i read:

Re: Desktop LCD Monitors

i almost vowed never to buy anything from dell again after they ran those ads with the "dude..your getting a dell! " guy.

Re: Desktop LCD Monitors

DAMNIT IAL, whyd you have to bring him up

i spent years of therapy trying to forget that ass >:(

Re: Desktop LCD Monitors

just trying to remind you about what kind of madness that dell company can resort to.. and we have to wonder, after an ad campaign like that..can we really trust dell products? .. are they safe to have around our children?.. these are some real issues that need answers.

Re: Desktop LCD Monitors

so if the DELL LCDs are good i am wondering if getting a full DELL package/setup dude is a good option for someone that wants an affordable editing station. i remember seeing that post somewhere on here where somebody was asking to buy a pc or mac and which kind. if DELL LCDs are good and they are running a special...hmmmmmm.

Re: Desktop LCD Monitors

in most cases, its best to custom build your machine, so that its specifically tailored to what youll be using it for . espescially video. youll want your hard drive size, and configuration to be set up for optimall performance while editing, and exporting video + audio. as well as its a good idea to strip the machine of the useless components and programs that just use up ports, and cpu powaz, and basically just slow you down, and cuase crashing from conflicts, and memory allocation errors... you could rearrange you r dell of course, unless theve gone propreitary now, but youd probably be better off with a completely open archetecture custom machine. that way your open for the future as well, and can do whatever you want.

Re: Desktop LCD Monitors

www.tomshardware.com has run many extensive comparison reviews between desktop LCD monitors, comparing their usefulness for various uses (games, etc). I think they determined that 17" panels were a lot better than the current crop of 19", but it's been a while since I read it so I don't really remember...

Re: Desktop LCD Monitors

I've also purchased and used the 19" samsung LCDs for systems that I built.  From what I heard, they actually make Dell's LCD monitors (just like Apple's LCDs).  So, seeing as how I could get the Dell LCDs for $475 while the Samsungs were at least $600, I went for the Dells.  If they aren't the same monitor, they are incredibly similar because both look exactly the same.  It's not too hard to believe tho because dell is pretty much a rebrander of all the "dell" peripherals they sell (just as the dell mp3 jukebox is really a Creative Nomad with a different case).

BTW, viewsonic LCDs suck. I tried a bunch of different ones and all were subpar.

My box is a Dell 400SC, a 3.2GHZ P4 HT that I purchased from dell for less than $100(after their website screw ups and some clever money back loop-holes, 100% leagal) Of course, I added 1gig of ram and 200gigs of additional storage. This has been the quietest PC I've had in a long time and it never crashes, and it comes in a small compact case. I've built my last 3 systems and I've now learned there is NO need to always custome build if you can find good premade systems, thats already factory tested.

Re: Desktop LCD Monitors

daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaamn!

$100! did you type that right? $1000 and i am still gonna rub my eyes and read it again. was that for the LCD alone or the whole DELL PC dude?! i know i could NEVER get that info out of you on how you did it.

so boog how is it for editing? games? graphics? motion? and what size is it 19" or 21"? i know there are reviews out there but you are a real human being. but seeing as you got the whole deal for $100 maybe you arent....

hmmmmmmmmmm

Re: Desktop LCD Monitors

Oh $hit... I wish i could have the entire setup for that cheap. I paid approx $90 for just the Dell box. then i sold them back the 128MB stick and the 40gig HD, and I transplanted parts from my previous PC into it. I paid $750 for the LCD. I find it great for editing. When I play video into its S-VID or composite input for full screen playback, I can notice some ghosting... but it's hardly noticable when editing at 1600x1200! Counter Strike plays great at 1600x1200. The monitor has a great zoom feature, so if you want to play at a lower resolution of 1024x768, it won't interpolate but would actually only use a cropped area of the entire display to displayed an un-interpolated desktop. It's bad-ass!
