Desert racing in Laughlin.

Dude this is killer stuff. What kind of set up do you have on your DVX? Inspiring. I called my cousing who rides moto-x and we're going to go shoot some stuff next weekend. Any tips on settings for fast action?

I like that Trophy footage. Is that all 30p? I only have one critique and that is to kill the auto iris. Good work.

That was cool. What are you doing with the footage? The suspension on those trucks is amazing.

Very nice photography.

First off all the slomo stuff is all super 16.
The DVX stuff was shot totally clean. 48 shutter speed, in-camera nd, nothing fancy whatsoever. Would have liked to do some 250 shutter speed which would be real nice, but then you need extra nd filters which we dont have.
Color correction was done on finalcut. Super16 was color corrected at CCI in LA, some of it was shot on color reversal film.
BTW, its the last time we take a film camera out there, way too clunky, the DVX performed so well, all we need is to come up on a good retimer software.

Great images franck! I liked how you gave the dvx footage it's own look, rather than trying to make em seamless. nice touch.

We used to film (S16 / 16mm) the commercials for Mickey Thompson Ent. Group's stadium races with the Grand National Sport Truck series - your footage totally takes me back! We shot under vapor lights, so our stuff wasn't nearly as beautiful as yours.

Ah, makes me remember my Arizona days and romping my Jeep around the desert...

The footage is good. I would recommend throwing in some alternative shots. There's lots of "truck launching off the jump", "buggy blasting through the desert", which all look good, but are all similar. For example, try shooting a closeup tracking shot of a driver and/or copilot. Or one of a wheel and shock being beat to crap as they plow through a rough section. Or just the dust from a roost at a sharp corner. Mix shots like those within what you have and you will have a great blend.

HansK: thanks for the advice, this was the first time we actually went out there to shoot desert racing or any racing for that matter, except for one of our operators who had experience with ATV stuff. I for instance was running around like a chicken with his head cut off.... where is the start? whats going on? how the hell?!
My buddy Kevin who was shooting the 16mil stuff almost got runned over by a class 10 buggy that went of course, missing the $40k camera by a few inches...
Next time I do one of those again I'll make sure we get more insert close ups, various dirt shots and try to hit more spots on the course.

that stuff was great. i saw myself filming in the background. my footy was shot on a crappy vx2000 though

You were there, ha, thats awesome. I dont even know who was winning this thing?
Do you cover a lot of desert racing?
