Desaturating entire Sequence or Project?

I have a ton of master clips and subclips that are all in colour ( I know I should have desaturated the master clips before cutting them into subclips... but I didn't, so this is where I'm at)

Is there a way to make the entire project, or at least the entire sequence defaulted to Black and White? That way when I drop a clip into the timeline it will automatically convert it to grayscale.

I am aware that once I have all the deisred clips in the timeline I can select all of them at drop the Desaturate filter onto them and do it that way. But until I have the final edit with all the clips I want, I'd like to be able to work in Black and White.

Basically wondering if this can happen without having to apply the filter to each clip as I drop it into the timeline during the editing process.

Thanks!

Dustin

Have you considered completing the project, nesting it, and then applying the filter to the nested sequence?

Or completing the sequence, exporting it, importing it, and then applying the filter to the imported file?

i think what you are running into is the old. "hindsight is 20/20". So basically yes it is to late. Edit in color then apply filter

From how I read his post, I believe he would like to actually cut the project in black and white, without having to apply a filter to each clip or constantly switching to the nested comp for reference.

Basically, I think he wants a way to desaturate the FCP canvas, which you can't do. There are only options for RGB, Red, Green, Blue, and Alpha.

So I think to do what he wants specifically, the only solution is to desaturate your preview monitor, or if you don't have one, your computer monitor if possible.

Perhaps if you move all of your clips and subclips into a timeline and do the paste attributes (with your b and w filter) . Then drag them up into a new bin?

so at this point, with my subclips all created, is it too late?

Don't worry about it. Color correction & sound mix should be among the very last things you do.

It's relatively easy to make your entire movie B&W when you're finished. More importantly, you may want to adjust how each clip is converted to B&W, or you may want to use color selectively, or you may change your mind entirely and want to finish the show in color.
