FS7: Desaturated colors in custom profiles

Have a troubleshooting question for you all. One of the shooters I worked with had an issue yesterday. We were shooting the same hyper gamma with the same exact settings and white balance, but his colors were completely desaturated. The colors were almost non existent, and it looked like he was in a log profile. We ran it thru an external monitor and it looked the same. We tried changing between different hypergammas, back and forth from Cine ei, etc. Nothing worked, I was st about 4300 temp and even putting his at 7000 it wasn’t as warm. Something is off, but we couldn’t figure it out before our shoot so we had to really boost saturation in post to match the cams. Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks!

Did you try saving a Scene file on the good camera and loading it into the "bad" camera?
Did you try saving an All file on the good camera and loading it into the "bad" camera?
Did you do a full factory reset of "bad" camera and then reload either of the two files mentioned above?

Doing any, or all, of those things probably would have taken less troublshooting time and fixed the problem quickly. And if it didn't fix the problem, the camera needs to go in for repair.

BTW, did the camera change it's "look" at all when any of the internal scene files were recalled -- assuming that he actually has some custom scene files stored onboard his camera?

Did you reload the Scene file on YOUR camera to ensure that your camera was truly using the paint menu settings you think it was? This is especially important if you are jumping back and forth between CINE EI and Custom. You must reload your Scene file every time you come back to Custom from CINE EI regardless of whatever settings the menus show that you are supposedly using. Don't trust it. Always reload after CINE EI to be safe.

We did not load any scene files. He had been shooting Cine EI on a previous project, but when we used custom on this project, that is when this happened. I will have him load a custom scene file and see if anything happens. Thanks for your suggestions. I’ll report back

Doug, he was able to load a custom scene file. He says that it looks better. Thanks for that information. I didn’t know that you needed to load a scene file each time you go from cine EI back to custom.

This is an elementary question, but did you have the same Matrix settings? That's where the color settings are.The same gamma will be irrelevant if the Matrix settings are different.

And AS OTHERS HAVE NOTED , THE Camera always defaults to Slog 3 whenever going from Cine EI back to Custom. Pain in the butt frankly.

Yes, we are aware that it reverts to Slog in custom mode. We changed the gammas multiple times but nothing would change the low contrast look. Apparently what was happening was that although the display and menu were showing that these values had changed, the camera was not actually changing anything. By loading a custom scene file like Doug recommended, the camera then did a kind of reset and contrast and color returned. He was then able to move back to the hypergamma we were trying to match and this time it actually changed as he cycled through the different gammas.

glad you found a solution.. but the camera definitely had or has a problem.. you should just be able to switch out of cine EI in the menu's back to custom .. you shouldn't have to load any scene files to achieve this..

I’m probably explaining it poorly. He can definitely enter the menu and switch from cine ei to custom mode. After that he can go to paint and switch from slog 3 to HG3 for example. But in that step, there is no change in the gamma. So although the display and menu say HG3 and all of the matrix parameters are correct, the image still looks like slog 3. That’s definitely some sort of bug, but by loading a scene file, he was able to make it right again. Thanks for all of your help.
