depreciation situation

I got my HVX200A like 5 months ago for $6500, im wondering how fast its gonna depreciate, should i wait to sell you think?

Well, things tend to depreciate more the longer you wait. But buying camera gear is never about resale value. You buy the gear you need for the work you do.

a cameras value on the market depends a lot on a lot of variables. i paid $5200 for my hvx200 and sold it nearly 2 years later with a pelican case for $4000. i consider that pretty good. i was lucky that there wasnt anything on the horizon that was dramatically set to change the marketplace.

what you have in front of you is this red scarlet thing. its making a lot of folks nervous because when it hits, its very likley to yank the bottom out of the value of current used prosumer cameras. id bet however that it will be this time next year before the scarlet becomes readilly available. and even when it does - your camera will still be very much an able production tool.

whats your motivation to sell your camera? and if you do sell it, what will you shoot with?
im with jim. buy your tools, use them, make money.

i made back as much as i paid for it. Of course i still need it, but im not sure whether to sell now or later. Maybe now i can get say $4000 and just rent for the next few gigs. or wait a few months and see if it sells for $400

are you basing this decision on the scarlet release? keep your camera and use it until it no longer serves your needs. you'll make more than enough for a scarlet between now and the time it actually becomes available. then you can donate your hvx to a school for a hefty tax deduction.
