Dentophobia (hvx+mini35)

Yes yes yes yes yes! Gorgeous! Everything about it, I loved. I almost peed myself when I saw him running over the bridge followed by all those dentists. And the subsequent images after that just made me fall in love.

If you can, could you share some details about your workflow and production? Budget? Number of crew members? Shooting schedule? Type of lenses, etc?

Absolutely wonderful, I'd love to know more.

It is really cool, the images are stunning...
My only question is why, with your technical abilities and apparently a strong sense for storytelling... WHY do a short instead of a feature?
just curious.

Nice to know that you like it :)

Here are some details:

I'm 20 years old and made this movie for imatriculation at a filmschool, i hope they like it too ;)

The budget was 4000€ and i did everything with friends of mine who helped me to bring this dream to reality. As i said, it was shot with the hvx and ps-mini35 with 3 arri master primes 18, 50 and 85 mm and very little lighting equipment. Everything that plays outdoor was shot with available light, we just used a butterfly once.
6 days of shooting, visit http://chfilm.de/dento.html for some pictures. We got great help by the stuntteam that created the fighting scenes for V for Vendetta.

On one day there were about 65 people arround to help and to get masked as dentists ;) but on that bridge you see about 350. That was some nice piece of compositing work for me...

Everything was captured on two 8gb p2 cards and loaded to an external fiwi400 hdd over a macbook pro with the help of the PSC 60 storage device. We were very lucky cause apple released the 720p25 update for final cut the day we started shooting. So we shot the dialogue scenes at 25fps and most of the action in 50p because we didn't want to use the natural sound anyway.

Everything was edited on a quad g5 2,5 with 4gb ram with the data on an external fiwi800 hdd and two backup hdds. Compositing was done on a pentium 4 2,8 2gb ram by myself and the help of two friends for rotoscoping ;)

That was it, if any questions are left, please feel free so ask :)

because at the university they want to see your abilitys on one short view! I hope it works!

I'd say... first and formost that no film school will be able to teach you what you already have. I'd say... being a film school grad... I didn't have your chops when I went to school at 18... this was my start and a lazy man's approach.

You have some skills already. I'd say to take that money and make this into a crazy kungfu actor. Get the stunt man involved and make a feature... You'll learn more than anything you could in school doing one. Buy Rick Schmidts book or another similarly... BUT I"m sure you have all that you'd get in film school

The only real thing you get in filmschool is two fold: Contacts and access to equipment. Faculty is and can be inspirational... but it's mostly the process and surroundings of peers.

Basically, I'm saying.. this is friggin stylized and great as it is.

Wow man. This kicks ass. I love hyper-stylized and ambitious work. The HVX really shines with that Mini35 and pro glass strapped to it.

Let us know when the entire thing drops. I'd love to see it.

In fact, this is what I'm looking for. And i don't know what else to do with my life:2vrolijk_08:

I will inform you asap when the whole movie is available in english!

Well good point. You'll have fun... make some good contacts and get to work on your own and other people's projects. I just know that it's not necessary.. but when you are young, want to get out on your own and get a degree... it's not a bad deal. Just make sure it's more of a university and not some over-priced vocational school. We have one here in town that's 72K a year to attend. That's so friggin' crazy that anyone would take on that kind of debt for a year of school. I went to Filmschool for 3 years, paying out of state tuition, for only 18,500 and that included going to London for 2 months... and don't get me started comparing instructors... etc. But that's an aside not.

Good luck and love the stylized german cinema... Some stuff just doesn't seem right when it's in English.. Needs to be in German or Sweedish for some reason.

:D In fact our "german nazi dentist" Dr. Hangst is played by an englishman ;)
But we thought about syncing the movie but let him say his text in his broken german with subtitles so his language appears like americans imagine german speech has to be ;)
Well but for festivals we will sync the movie i think.

I agree that many people who come from filmschool were not able to make a movie like this one (oh that sounds egoistic ;) ) but as i said I want a degree!

I'm very happy that you like the trailer that much!!! Makes me proud:dankk2:

Some people have stills and that's apparent. Just don't let film school suck all of that imagination away. I felt like it did to me in someways. When you learn the rules then it's hard to know how to break them... and they tend to preach uniformity. However in Germany probably a lot differnt. I know when I was in film school I got to see Wings of Desire and that totally rocked my world. That's a masterpiece. Also, pretty much anything by Hertzog I feel the same way about..

Congrats and let's see the short when it's done....

film school hahahahahahahaha--------FOOL!!!!! you need to shoot more FILMS like this. I dont know about germany you for sure not going to learn those compositions and have that production value in any film school not even AFI.
