Yo Aaron,

I'm downloading your reel now. We have the same first and middle name. Cool eh? My name is Aaron David Marshall.

Your reel looked nice. I liked the dancing disco guy the best. There was a mixture of high key and low key lighting which was cool. I think your weakest point was in some of the outside shots looking upward at the characters. Your strongest was probably, well, everything else was pretty darned good.

On an artist to artist philosophical level my adive would be to stay away from that CSI, or aka Jerry Bruckheimer produced TV show looking lighting. It does look pretty snazzy, but so did bell bottoms and massive fros at one time. It'll look dated at some point instead of capturing a timeless emotion.

You're a very talented guy. I look forward to seeing more of your work.

Wow, that is pretty freaking amazing. How do you shoot/edit for the aspect ratio? I like the way you frame things. Keep it up!

I shoot with cropping in mind normally. There is mixed footage in there however of things that were shot anamorphically and things I shot in letterbox.

do you happen to be a member on any skate messageboards like Be-mag, because ive sworn ive seen your work around there once or twice, very nice framing you have a good eye.

Aaron,

How can you ignore the fact that we are both named Aaron David? You disappoint me. Can't you be even a little personable? :) I'm kidding.

Ok, the Bruckheimer TV series look... It's a very harsh looking. It looks like they use tons of rim lighting, yet most everything is low key with a blue coloration. Everything seems synthetic and it captures no natural beauty. Which is pretty much the freaking idea of the show. It's unnatural feeling.

In small doses it could look great. A lot of the shots are done very well by the DP of those shows. It's not really the technical quality, but more of the artistic I'm criticizing. Most of those Jerry Bruckhiemer produced shows have that same damned look or similar. In CSI: Miami replace Blue with Red.

I'm not saying you're going to do this, but letting you know that you might have a tendency to shoot like that from some of your shots. If you get a job with Bruckheimer argue and try to capture some natural beauty from some logical light sources.

I'll give him some credit for the show "Close to Home". It's not as harshly lit. Not that it's extremely artistic, but at least my eyes don't feel strained.

I can see what you mean however, everything I shoot I try to shoot with totally different style unless it calls for otherwise. However, for being 19 years old and self taught I'd like to think my technical and artistic styles are headed in the right direction, I have some maturing to do in the way of advanced lighting though however, now that I am selling the DVX (Blasphemy right?) and shooting film I think that I will be progressing alot faster.

wow, i dont know how I missed the Aaron David comment. I met someone on myspace named Aaron Lavinsky from Australia who looked somewhat like me, it was pretty crazy. Aaron from down under.

I thought you did a really good job and I really enjoyed your perspective shots. One question I ask a lot of people with demo reels, your music...yours? or did you some how obstain the rights?
