Demo Reel...thoughts?

Hey guys. I want to say thanks for always providing an open and welcoming atmosphere for people to show their work. There's nothing like an objective eye when your own perspective is so used to your own material.

In that spirit, I thought, "Why the hell not throw my hat in the proverbial ring?". So please take a gander and give me your thoughts....It is 33 megs for those who may not have the time to download it, but please give it a whirl!

Adrian,

You do beautiful work. You have a fine eye, I liked the choices you used and loved the music.

Do yourself a favor and create a high bandwidth version that is much larger. It's very hard to see because the frame is so small. Also, for the sake of uniformity, try to keep your black levels consistent. Some shots are very rich and others have a milky black that can destroy the beauty.

Anyway, I wish you luck. You are obviously very talented.

Thats amazing stuff! Which is the DVX footage?
I'd love to see in a higher bandwidth version like disjecta said.

Nice...very cinematic. Great variety of lighting conditions. The black levels did seem a bit off from shot to shot, but I assume that's just the way each project was finished.

Did you shoot anything specifically for the demo reel, or were these all from actual films?

I'll try and get a bigger version up soon - newbie to web hosting! All the shots are from films I have been shooting for the past two years, and have just had the fortune of being able to hunt down from assorted directors....

The DVX footage is:

two guys walking night exterior - and the two other shots with them
close-up of the blonde girl, tracking shot in with male lead
the close-up of the guy blowing out smoke (all others with him as welll (1.85 and 2.35) and the blonde girl reading)
close-up of kid singing (from music video)
close-up of girl answering the phone
the two 2.35 shots - head in right foreground with children in left background and the following dolly of the guys legs with the poker.

thanks guys for all the comments!

Really good.

Just a couple of observations. Music - maybe blend two different pieces in there instead of just the one? (although could be just personal taste). And I think you have stronger visuals to end on - guys running from the tunnel, couple in bed come to mind.

Overall, this is the best cinematographic narrative stuff I've seen on this site.

Cheers.

That was a real pleasure to watch, extremely well done, and the music worked well too, subtle change in melody that kept it interesting!

My only comment/question is that it appeared to me as though the DVX footage really stood out from most of the other footage, i.e. it seemed considerably less "filmic" to me, more "video"/sharp than I hoped it would. And given that I just bought a DVX, it makes me a little concerned that I'll have to do some softening in post or filter... do you know what settings you used in the DVX, specifically for the stuff you shot of the guy? I remember seeing that Nancy Schreiber, who won the Excellence In Cinematography at Sundance 2004 with the DVX, had pushed down the detail to -7 and I think the pedestal as well was way down.

Really solid work Adrian (hey that's my name too). Anyways, I'd LOVE to see the one w/ the old guy. Anywhere I can see some of that work?

Wow that is some really nice stuff. I like how you use your CC and color in the camera to set different tones in shot. Very artistic and functional at the same time.

Nice! I'm impressed! I loved the opening shot, and the cu of the steve buscemi-looking character.

Keep up the EXCELLENT work!!

Some of the stuff I shot was before I truly understood the camera so the default settings for some shots (CC in post) and only later did I start to experiment with in camera coloring (thanks Barry and your book!). Two of the shorts are on Triggerstreet.com (One Up and The Hero) but the rest of the stuff is at festivals or still being worked on (Wunderkind will be on Trigger soon - Buscemi guy CU). The short with the old man was shot on HD (Sony F900) - i'll see if I can post....
