Demo Reel - John Kelly

I've been working on this for a little while, so I thought I'd throw my Cinematography demo reel up here.

Right now, it's only material from my thesis films, one shot on an SRIII and the other on the HVX+M2(nikon). The grading is just a first pass (the reel exports out of final cut something like 1 stop brighter than it is on my hd monitor).

Sharp looking demo reel you have, and i liked the song choice. Great shots in there! Although if i might have one comment, the shot where the hot wired the car looked like a jump cut - she opened the door and got in the car, then got in the car again in the next shot.

Some good stuff- liked the night scenes with the spectacled kid the most. That said, your reel should be composed of your absolute best shots without apologies- I wasn't too wild about the terribly grainy shot of the briefcase @ 1:06, and I'd cut out before we see the reflection of the big bounce source @ 2:12.
Ditch repetitive shots from the second project with the m2, like the girl on the side of the car. I keep feeling as if we're cutting back to the same thing. Also, be judicious in choosing shots that are in sharp focus.
Finally, cut those shots that linger too long. A short, meaty reel is infinitely better than a long, fluffy one.

thats good stuff, nice work! really makes me want to go out and shoot something, anything almost.

what were you using for most of the stedicam shots? have a favorite combination with the HVX or other?

There were actually no steadicam shots in the reel. Everything moving was either dolly, dolly+jib or handheld.

I've used a glidecam v20 with the hvx, but not with the m2 on it. My experiences with the glidecam have been mixed since I'm a bit too thin to use it properly; I usually have to pad myself with towels.

Thank you for the feedback! I'm still working on it so I'm definitely going to address those issues.
