Demo Reel/Actors Reel question

I'm trying to edit an actor's reel for a friend and was wondering two things ...

1.) What file type is "best" to get all of his clips in to throw into final cut and edit together considering he has things shot on film, the RED, DV, and other prosumer model cameras?

2.) While we wait to retrieve his clips in this file type we wanted to throw together a quick reel off his DVDs he has (he leaves for a premiere in CA thursday) what's the "best" way to rip the footage off the DVDs and what file type to rip it into ... etc, I'm sure you get what I mean..

Thanks!

In interest of speed and file size, I'd try to match your lowest codec... in this case, DV. Or you can up-rez your DV and get everything converted to ProRes. It really just depends on your system and how fast you'd like to work.

For the DVD files, assuming that you aren't ripping from commercial DVDs, programs like Cinematize or Handbrake will do it. Convert them to the codec flavor of your liking... considering that you're working from a heavily-compressed format, DV will be just fine.
