Demo Reel 2008

nice!

were you using a crane or just a dolly or both for a lot of the shots with movement?

when showing color correction before and after footage were you just using a simple wipe effect? how was that done?

Mad skills my friend.

I really like the CC, and I also thought the rhythm and pacing of the edit was brilliant!

Didn't like the camera settings / lens settings in the lower right - it might be better to know the client / project info instead.

I agree with soarprod.
Unless you were showcase extreme versatility in formats 8mm,16mm,35mm,HD i don't think they're needed.
Also, the color correction wipes over your dp stuff i don't like. Most of them arn't that drastic and is kind of distracting. Let your work speak for itself.

I thought it all looked great. I don't know about what the other two post are talking about. Keep doing your thing you've got talent.

i like the footage. would only comment on another music selection. Perhaps a change of music as you change footage. music to go with your footage. it would at more feel to your reel. 4 -5 stars on the reel bud. nice work. I loved your idea of the laying cards on the table and footage tracked them. nice touch. i might have to use your idea on one of my productions if you don't mind. thanks for sharing..

the flow of the reel was smooth. good pacing and rhythm. The song through me off a bit thou. it set a different mood from what I was seeing. other than that it was a solid reel.

Yah so what if it included tutorial info from kramer hehe, its not like we were all born with this kinda knowledge.

My problem with it is the colour grading swipes and dancing graphics etc - but only if this is supposed to be a dop showreel - cos it comes off more like a corporate video showreel for a company etc. As you the artist it does not really inspire.

Some of the grading swipes had a slightly disorientating feel to them - and really distract from the image. The nerdy dancing is really quite distracting too.

I would lend your showreel a greater sense of dignity (than using those) and if its is a showreel for your cinematography then you definately do not need to show the grading changes imo.

Let your work for itself rather than coating it with gimmicks as its very transparent to anyone who would hire u for production work (like a producer or director) but sure it may well impress folk wanting a corporate video!

Good work tho mate

Thanks to all for your comments. Only in my second year of school, so still kinda learning things. But all the things pointed out are definetily vaild. My teacher uses Kramer for lessons and thats where the dance keys came from. But I can see that. As for the wipes I'm trying to get into digital intermediate colorist, so I need to focus on that. Settings should be gone. Till next time.... Go Sheridan College, Where a tripod is a gun.

A tripod truly is a gun, lol I heard about that today... Did the teacher not know what a tripod looks like? Or a what "LONG GUN" really looks like hahah we might have our selves a new nick name for the sticks.

Who's your teacher that uses kramer as his lessons? doesn't he know that you can watch them online for free(95%) RATHER than you shelling out the 7500$ a year for tuition so that he can tell you to watch them. That's the only problem I ever had with Sheridan, they often don't give you your money's worth. It depends on how you look at it.

As you can tell I am MA Veteran... perhaps I should give it a rest ;)

Good luck with Sheridan. Insist on being the leader!

Cheers

You are a man of many talents indeed, but for client sake and to keep things on a seperate and equal footing.. Id' tend to say that it would be more versatile and more in keeping with the many hats that you were to have different reels than to combine them into one. Like one for DP, one for motion graphics and one for colorist. Also, this looks more like a colorist reel than anything else.

Also, I've learned that when people contact me as a DP, that's what they want to see and to have other stuff can be dismissive. Same if I'm contacted as an editor, I'll concentrate more on that instead. Just my .02.

BTW.. Love the skating stuff. I also think that the colorist stuff didn't look that dramatic. I'd showcase something showing some selective color.. maybe some black and white, something really intense too and the over crushed blacks didn't just do it for me.

overall though.. mad skilsl and that, I just think that you'd be better to keep it all seperate and then really pump it up.

Awesome man! I really like it, you have some awesome shots in there!

I felt like the color correction wipes should have been used in the color correction section, and not in the cinematography section though.

cheers, I particularly liked the high shutter stuff, where the runners run through shot,
