Dell with Vegas

How good is Dell - I'm working on the HP laptop but needed to switch to a tower for more power. I pick up a Dell Studio XPS yesterday from Best Buy and it crash within the first 30 minutes. Now I'm packing it up and returning it to them. Not sure if it was just a bad computer that I received or it is in general a bad computer all the way around.

I've used Dells at work and never had a problem with them but when I was looking to buy another laptop most of what I found on Dell was not that great for the price.
I think however that Dells and Vegas should not cause an issue if the computer [Dell] is up to spec.

I wonder about Best Buy more than Dell.

you can try Alienware...looking at their website, it appears they're owned by Dell now? Custom "gaming" pcs. pretty nice for the price.

I had a Dell XPS tower for many years with no blue screens at all. I would rate it as the most dependable computer I've ever owned (and I've owned way too many). Just gave it away last fall as I upgraded to a quad core HP, with W7 that bluescreened a bit with transfers from the SD card reader to an external USB drive. An upgrade from HP fixed the problem. Most blue screens these days ('crashes') seem to be caused by bad drivers rather than 'defective' gear. You probably would have been better off just reformatting and reloading the OS if the machine was brand new. You didn't mention how the 'crash' happened. If it was running Vegas, it might have been the version rather than the machine or OS you were running it on. Given the right RAM etc. you "should" be able to run Vegas 9.0c or d just fine on Win7 and Dell hardware. I ran Vegas for a couple of months on Win7 with really no problems.

Does this answer your question or is there something else that's being asked?

New Zealand,

I have used a Dell Studio XPS desktop and laptop for the past year. For the most part they work fairly well. I use very little effects. I have had a few problems with drivers and rendering (can get frustrating). Good luck rendering longer projects with Magic Bullet (32 bit only). I too thought of buying a Mac until I discovered that Vegas does not sell a Mac Version, only PC. At this time, I am not interested in buying and learning a different NLE system.

This being said, I trudge on with the Dell and as stated, it does a descent job. I would recommend getting the fastest processor you can (=/> 2.8 GHz) along with 6-8 gb of ram.

I've had a dell XPS 9000 for 3 months now which I ordered off Dell's website. They were having a sale and the deal I got was pretty much unbeatable. i7 920 2.6ghz processor, 8gigs of ram, 750gb HDD, a 23" monitor, mouse, keyboard, and a 2 year warranty. All for $1150. Best Buy was carrying the XPS 8100 at the time which I looked at but it would have cost more for everything I got.

I took the Dell back and one of the problems they found was the fan. The wires inside the tower got loose and went into the fan causing it to break down. They offered to fix it but I figure after paying $1200 for it yesterday they should just replace it. They also were having problems trying to get the computer to run. It was just a lemon computer.

Did they replace it? There should be no dispute, if you just bought the computer yesterday and still have the receipt they have to take it back and give you another.
