delivering MXF files

I have a shoot for a client and they want the MXF files off the p2 cards for editing in FCP. Is it simply a matter of dubbing the files onto say a DVD-r and sending it to them? any advice is appreciated
Jeff
ps i will be shooting dvcpro50 standard def

Jeff,

If you're going to give them all of your footage, then delivering the MXF on a DVD should be fine. Just be sure to include the tiny little file named "lastclip.txt", else FCP will lose it's mind....

In other threads here they also recommend naming the volumes so they'll be more useful on the editing side.

A better solution than giving raw MXF files may be to use HDLog. With it, you can rename the clips to something useful. You can also use a combination of say Reel+Project+1,2,3 so during editing if any clip is lost, they'll be easy to find and relink.

And output FCP XML files of just the clips, or portions of them, you want to pass along already converted to QT. These import seamlessly so no worries about conversions, missing files, etc.

Oh, and using HDLog means you can pass more detailed metadata to the editor too. For example, you can add log notes, descriptions, etc. that will show up in the editor. Straight MXF transfers contain very little metadata and no annotations...

Thanks for the reply Dan.
is the HdLog for mac only? my edit system is the canopus edius and all i have to do to import the MXF files is connect the usb from cam to computer and i am off to the races. The job i am doing for this particular client is shooting only, then sending them the clips to edit in FCP. 5 "live to tape" (or p2 in this case) walk and talk type commercials for a car dealer. so i would think 5 good takes would fit on a DVD-R easily just got to remember the lastclip.txt file is included . Does that sound like it would work ? what do you think out there FCP users?

Hey Jeff,

i am a pc based Edius user, and i shot something like 150 p2s (4gig) in dvcpro50 and did a backup on dvds.

I think Hdlog is just for mag, so just copy all the stuff on your harddisk, be carefull that you always copy the lastfile as well, its important that you do a folder for each card (like "card_01....card_02" and so on) where you put the lastfile clip and the content folder inside(just by copy).
I dont work with fcp, but you can see the same in edius: this way the nle can recognize the mxf files an put everything in the rught place.

I think there is nothing wrong with your idea of delivering, just make sure that you use 4.7 gig DVDs (if you can, depend on which size of p2 you shoot), this is mostly more compatible for the clients to read data on their dvd drives.
It will fit about8 minutes of dvcpro50 on one 4.7 dvd.

good luck...and give us some money from the comercial..!
