Delete part of a clip

Okay I shoot a clip on normal tape stock. I shoot classified materials. No biggie, the guy doing the declassification rewinds the tape, hits record, records black, voila, I'm good to go.

So, enter the HVX 200. I shoot classified materials. What to do now? Can I somehow delete just a part of that clip in camera? I need a solution that can happen in camera, other options are not viable. I know I could delete the entire clip, but if only 3 seconds of a 5 minute clip need to be deleted that's a hard hit to take. Just wondering if there is any way to deal with this scenario? If not, we might need to ditch the HVX for at least one aspect we had though we could have used it on.

cheers.

Why not just bring a laptop with you? You could then offload the P2 card to the laptop, and have the guy doing the declassification edit out the offending footage directly on your laptop. You'd then erase the P2 card and reinsert it in the camera.

Sooo wish I could...

Well for starters, then we lose our MXFs. If we have to import the footage into an NLE, wipe the cards, then modify the master MOV or whatever, we don't really have any masters left. Yes we could turn the MOVs into masters sure, but that's kind of a risky way to be going.

Also, not sure I'd get anyone to sign off on that. The broadcaster has loosened their stance on not using more than a certain % of HDV, so we might end up just shooting on the Z1U we had been using before. I just wanted to see if I could find a solution so that we can keep using the HVX because frankly the images are so much better (also they are easier to match to the Varicam materials which are our primary content).

Basically this is all just a long shot I'm going for here. I think its far more likely that we lose the ability to use the HVX for this stuff. But I didn't want to sign off on that happening without having exhausted other possibilites first. Thanks for the reply though.

There is no way to delete part of a clip in the HVX as currently constituted. That's at the top of my "wish list" for a potential future firmware update, but as of right now, no.

Here's an idea though -- if you were using a laptop or a second HVX, you could firewire record just the portion of the clip you need, and then you could delete the original clip. Don't know how practical that is for you, but it's a thought.

Dang...

Dang...

Thanks Barry. That's too bad but it is what I was expecting to hear. In a case like ours it would prove invaluable to be able to do so, but alas, guess we'll just to wait on that and see if Panasonic addresses it or not.

As for the laptop idea, that is potentially what we may have to do. At least it is what I would prefer to do; but the higher brass will likely lean towards going back to the Z1U. I would certainly like to prevent such, but at the end of the day its not my call. :undecided

cheers.
