Defective Heads (attn: jan c.)

I address this to Jan and other Panasonic techies and DVX owners who are perhaps having similar issues.

I bought a DVX 100a, ran it a bit and put a test tape thru it (yes, Pana MQ) and was pretty astounded that I had instant problems with dropouts/'venetian blind-blue screen' on playback.  I returned it to the dealer (authorized Panasonic of course) and they replaced it with a new one, few questions asked.  Guess what?  Same issue on the new one after 2 hrs.  This is surely not fouled heads as the conditions of shooting and storage were as near as optimal, dust-wise, low humidty.  Now, dealer service dept. says yes, there is not an issue with dirty heads, but a known voltage irregularity on a certain batch of record head assemblys from the factory.  However, they offered only to repair it only not replace it (an authorized shop in B'klyn NY) as they say Panasonic won't replace it at this point.

Jan, as a rep can you speak to this?  What is Panasonic's policy on 2 lemons?  I feel I should have a new working camera, not a repaired one esp. after only a few hours on the meter.  We're getting set to shoot a documentary but at this point have very low confidence on the field reliability of this DVX.

Thanks.

Re: Defective Heads (attn: jan c.)

Why are you posting this here, rather than returning to your dealer, or contacting Panasonic directly?

Sorry, but this is a rather odd approach to receive a solution to your concern.

If this is in fact a "known voltage irregularity on a certain batch of record head assemblys", then contact Panasonic directly for a solution, or have the problem corrected at your authorized B'klyn shop. If, as you say Panasonic won't replace it, get it fixed, or return it for different brand.

It seems if you're shooting a documentary soon, and you're not comfortable with the DVX, the decision is simple.

The XL2 is a nice camera btw.

Re: Defective Heads (attn: jan c.)

Posting here to a) get comments from the Panasonic rep I understand read this bb, and b) to get feedback from others who may have had a similar issue. I thought that was clear.

Re: Defective Heads (attn: jan c.)

Why not just send it to us for repair?? Pookiehead, you should have dropped our name. Anyway, it was a tape path issue, not a voltage whatever. If you would like it repaired, please contact us.....

So how old is the camera? sounds like you have a tape problem, the record head assy, thing sounds totally fishy to me. If within 7 days of purchase, shouldn't be a problem.

>Jan, as a rep can you speak to this?

I am not a rep. I am the Product Manager. A rep sells something.

>What is Panasonic's policy on 2 lemons?

We have an initial failure policy, and it is not limited. However if someone had two failures in a row, I would want to investigate further and find out what all is involved. Sems a littl odd to me. I fdo ind it odd to have two go down on the same person.

>I feel I should have a new working camera, not a repaired one esp. after only a few hours on the meter.

The initial failure policy is only through authorized dealers, and not through the many little mom and pop shops that buy from a distibution chain but contact me off list. Please give me your model number and serial number as written on the underside of the viewfinder, with your location and the name of your vendor.

>We're getting set to shoot a documentary but at this point have very low confidence on the field reliability of this DVX.

Well all I can say to that is people have taken it to the ends of the earth, see Jarred's blog, as an example, and they don't have a problem. You have a problem, we just don't know what that is as yet.

Looking forward to hearing from you off list.

Best,

Jan
