defective dvx100a units?

Hi guys,

Just got off the phone with the vendor that sold me my dvx100a--he asked me if my camera was okay (whether or not the picture was noisy and/or the sound recording was too soft); apparently, he has had numerous complaints regarding these issues and mentioned that panasonic is aware and isn't releasing more units for the time being.

He promised to send me pictures that another customer is preparing to illustrate the noise issue. As a first time dvx100 user, I can't really speak to how much noiser the picture is in a "defective" 100a model vs. a 100; regardless, the news makes me a bit concerned about my camera, especially since I don't know much about video cameras to begin with. :-[

Let me know if you guys have heard anything similar regarding a cease on production or potential recall or rampant complaints from new owners of the 100a.

And, yes, this is me again: the idiot who couldn't figure out how to remove the anamorphic adapter... :-[

Best,
Hemipod

Re: defective dvx100a units?

are you kevin who posted something similar to the on the dvinfo.net forum?

Re: defective dvx100a units?

I haven't noticed anything wrong with mine.... (fingers crossed)

Re: defective dvx100a units?

Same here. No major problems although I have nothing to compare it to. I have noticed a bit more noise in the picture than I would like but don't know if this is an indication of a problem or settings.

Re: defective dvx100a units?

someone have a screen grab? would like to see what kinda noise you are getting.

Re: defective dvx100a units?

No problems here... I must've gotten lucky and gotten a good cam.

Re: defective dvx100a units?

wholly ****. That is a joke right?

Re: defective dvx100a units?

What do you mean, Jarred, it looks fine to me.

(Kai, I laughed outloud and hoped no one in the next office heard)

Re: defective dvx100a units?

I never know anymore.. I once laughed out loud in a post about someone's screengrab and they where dead serious..

Re: defective dvx100a units?

You're right, Jarred. I certainly meant no insult. Some of it was the timing. I was reading these serious posts about defective cams when I read Kai's comment at the bottom of my screen while the screen grab was not in view yet. When I clicked down the screen, it caught me by surprise, so I laughed. (It was a joke, wasn't it, Kai?)

Re: defective dvx100a units?

haha...i was lmao as well when i saw that! it's so obvious kai that you used "render noise" from final cut pro...what's not funny is that i'm going to finally get my dvx100a next week so this rumored defect is getting me worried?!?!? ???

Re: defective dvx100a units?

When you get your camera next week, post a clip and see how much it looks like Kai's! :D

Re: defective dvx100a units?

But is there any validity to this argument about the defective DVX-100A units? A few chums of mine are lined up for purchasing them for their small company, and nothing from Panasonic has been said. Any ideas?

Re: defective dvx100a units?

According to Noah Kadner over at 2-pop, he confirmed with Panasonic that this is a rumor that is completely untrue...

Re: defective dvx100a units?

I'm afraid I'm in the same boat - I got a DVX100A last week. There's definitely more noise than there should be, and a frame grab doesn't really show it in what I've shot so far. It's more temporal noise that you see while viewing a clip, as if you had the gain turned up.
I'm also noticing another bug -- the ND 1/64 indicator is always on in the display (even if off or on 1/8 position) and the 1/8 ND "suggestion" indicator goes on quite often, no matter what the lighting is.
I already had to pay a lot to test (and mail back) 2 JVC HD10 cameras and decided to get the DVX100A instead (much better camera, except for these problems) so I'm not very happy right now.

Re: defective dvx100a units?

I talked to my service guy today who hasn't heard anything yet and he's going to talk to the Panasonic rep. in my area, Ted Castillo. I'll let you know whether he confirms or denies the matter.

Re: defective dvx100a units?

Hi guys,

Someone had asked me if I was "kevin" from another forum who had posted something about this--I checked the other forum and found this post from Kevin:

I spoke with Ted Castillo, Pana west coast tech rep and he said yep there was a hold on shipments of DVX100A cameras due to a quality control check but he had not heard what the problem was. I described the noise problem I was having and he said send it back to the dealer for a replacement as an 'Initial Failure' situation.

Another large bit of news is that I just spoke with Winston at Biz-Max (where I purchased the camera) and he said his Panasonic sales rep had just called and is having him send all unsold DVX100A cameras back to Panasonic for a check over. He said there has also been mention of some kind of sound problem with the camera, if I understood him correctly.

I will be returning my camera for an exchange but there is no specific time frame for getting a 'clean' replacement camera yet..

I guess this is real.
