Dedicated to USA.

I post here a short film (just 90 seconds) I did in Spain (my mother country). Screen size is not so big, but file size is just about 3 Mb.
Because there are a few sentences in spanins, I let you know the frame of the short: This films shows a normal family starting a new working day; Dad leaves to the office and suddenly Mum gets a call from him asking for some forgotten papers to bring urgently to the office. Mum leaves the children alone at home and.... the rest you will see.

Give me your opinion, thanks.

Re: Dedicated to USA.

Sorry but I tried it and works fine. I use the link Win Media Player to see it. Remember that the right link is not the first but the second posted.

Thanks for your opinion again.

Re: Dedicated to USA.

OK, note -- save to your desktop before you try to play.

I've got a wicked download speed (usually 2300+ kbps), and it won't stream.

Re: Dedicated to USA.

Perhaps it's a language issue, but I'm not sure what you were trying to say here . . . it could either be poignant or so unbelievably offensive, I couldn't even begin to describe it.

Re: Dedicated to USA.

Dear Jubal:

Most probably you did not catch the message. Sorry for that.

Of course, I am a serious person and never try to joke or provoque with this fact.

My message wants to show the sad story from another point of view than the mass media was using. I remember at that time that a lot of children were alone in the kindergardens because both parents were there, so, this was inspiring me.

In fact I showed this film to some american friends and they were really touched. Please let me know if you catched it. I do not want to remain with such sad comments from you at all.

Thanks

Re: Dedicated to USA.

Well, OK, I was really hoping that's what you meant by it. I get it -- the children lost their parents, and it *is* poignant, as I said it could be. But like I also said, with the spoken language, it was hard to tell. Everyone spoke Spanish; the kids watched a PAL-Plus TV, the architecture, design, and so forth is notably European, and the New York Times headline could only have been from the next day, not the morning of -- so I didn't think these people lived in America. Then, of course, "What a Wonderful World" was playing over that headline and photos of the atrocity, and while I mean no offense to you personally or to anyone else, Spain has long been a bastion of anti-Americanism.

So, quite frankly, I didn't know what to think, but I hoped for the best, and from what you say, you meant well, and I believe you.

So, as for the piece itself, I thought it was well-done; the cross dissolves were especially effective, which is saying something considering that they should be generally be used sparingly.

Re: Dedicated to USA.

Thanks, you got my points more or less clearly. In fact language is a barrier, yes.

About architecture style, I had to shoot it in my house, then I couldn't change that.

About newspaper, in fact is found among the leaves the following day, because there is a night in the middle (kids remain sleeping in the living room)

And last sentence in the final clip is "When mum will come ?" just to enphasize the loneless of such poor kids...

My intention was to touch the people, specially those who are parents, like I am. The fact of kid remaining without parents because of this disaster is for me one of the most toching parts of the tragedy.

Thes song "what a wonderful world" is just an irony to give the message of the contrary (what a **** of world !)

About Spain as Anti-American, most probably you are not weel informed or perhaps manipulated by media. I do not want to go to politics (and more in this forum) but my intention with the film is absolutely neutral, just human feelings.

Thanks again for your comments.

Re: Dedicated to USA.

Ah.  Now that you say a night passed, it makes more sense.  On another pass, I can see how you meant to show that (though I'd point out that with 24-hour cable networks, American TV stations rarely go to fuzz at night anymore).

I would do more to emphasize the passage of a night.  I don't know -- a shot of the night sky; maybe an exterior of the house with the living room light on.  Maybe spend another few seconds on the passage of time.  I think it just goes by too quickly to get it across that a night has passed.  As it's a critical plot point, it can't just slip by.

I can also see how you meant to show that it was an American house -- with Coca-Cola cans prominent, M&Ms, etc..

And again, not knowing what the girl said at the end (I'm a German speaker myself), the effect is probably lost.

I'm not sure that the children having lost parents wasn't covered by the media, at least here -- most news outlets are children-obsessed, and are constantly looking for the "human angle" . . . especially local news.

But overall, I think it's a good short film.  It looked good; it was edited well; it makes a poignant statement in a brief period of time.  A good effort.

Re: Dedicated to USA.

Thanks, Jubal.

Thanks too for the tips. Although the night is shown through the timelapse take of the sunset in the window and in addition kids sleeping with artificial light. I assume that so compressed clip leads in poor detailed visualization. PAL version is much more clear...

By the way I recorded it with a unexpensive panasonic NV-DS35 (consumer camcorder). Now I got the brand new DVX100A, where I expect to have a lot of fun !

Re: Dedicated to USA.

Download it in full before you try to play it. Save it to your desktop (or wherever). That's the only way I could get it to play.
