Decks

Can't find the right playback deck.
Tried lower end Panasonic and Sony cameras but they will not display timecode so I can record on a VCR. It will show timecode on the camera LCD but not back to a Monitor and then out to a VCR.
Then I found a Canon Elura 60 that would record to VHS. The strange problem was that some tapes the audio capture had an echo. It played fine on the display but when captured in echoed. It was not a software problem. Some tapes worked fine but others echoed. So I took it back.
The Sony DSR 11 will not display timecode back to a monitor, so B&H tells me, thus no offline edit with a VHS.

I am really surprised at how difficult this is.

Any suggestions?

Re: Decks

Just so I'm following along on this.....

you want to edit digital on analogue, assuming MiniDV to VHS?

Re: Decks

If you have any type of editing application (like FCP) you could add a timecode burn in and output to any video.

But it sounds like you want to go straight from MiniDV to VHS with a burn in and without doing any computer capture. You could consider setting the DVX to display it on a monitor (I think) but that would be wear and tear. I take it the DSR doesn't have a monitor mode of any type that displays the timecode on a screen?

You could also see about having a video service do it.

Re: Decks

Actually I want to do two things. Analog out to VHS and Firewire to the computer. I want to offline edit with an assistant using VHS then take to computer and edit.

Is that any clearer?

Re: Decks

Curious why you're doing a preliminary tape edit instead of just editing directly on the computer to begin with.

Re: Decks

I work with another person and she does not have an editing system. Also if I want to share with a client a VHS is necessary. Do you have a better workflow suggestion?

Also I found the camera answer for displaying timecode. Some mini Dv's have a setting ONLY on the remoter control that allows you OSD, on screen display. Panasonic has a nice 3 chip 120 model that will display code.

Re: Decks

Thanks for the update. Glad you found a solutions (and good to know).

Workflow- Are these slated takes? Commonly a client will have an interest in which take works best but the fine tuning of editing a specific range is usually made in the editing room. (i.e. I like take 5, especially when he turns his head)

Re: Decks

I am shooting documentaries with 10 to 50 hours of footage and do not want to capture all of it. So we will find major sections, capture those and then edit.
Thanks again.

Re: Decks

I don't know B&H are talking about, as my Sony DRS11 deck does display time code if you press "display" on the remote. This will display on the monitor or record if you are dubbing onto VHS.
Hope this helps,

Re: Decks

At last. Thanks. That is the info I was looking for. I just purchased the Panasonic 3ccd 120 that displays timecode but, guess what, it will not display timecode from an already recorded tape from the DVX 100. I am talking to Pan now to see what camera is able to do this. If anyone knows that would be a help. As of now I have tried Canon, which would work but the audio would not come through clear, then a Sony and then the 120l
