GH2 Decisions!

My nonprofit is looking for a still/video option. So far, I'm loving what I've read about the GH2. My questions, and I'm hoping you all might have answers are:

1. Audio Monitoring?
2. I know I have to buy a program to convert to edit in Final Cut Pro, anyone else done this?
3. If so, can I isolate audio tracks (the built in and external) for editing purposes?
4. I'm looking for inexpensive wireless mic options that would work with GH2, suggestions?

Thanks all!

1. none. you could use a h4n and a sescom cable and just watch the levels. Not ideal but it works.
2. just use log and transfer in final cut or use premiere pro
3 built in and external? no. or maybe h4n + shotgun or whatever then not record it to the gh2 and use internal mics on the gh2?
4 H1 and a lav. just put it on whoever and hit record. or get good wireless stuff.

Tommy pretty much nailed it. What I'd recommend for audio is something like the H4n + wireless + wired shotgun. That's going to cost you a fair amount of money but will give you excellent results & will let you monitor audio. I'd use the on-board GH2 audio for sync purposes. If you want to make the whole syncing process easier on yourself I'd drop $150 on Pluraleyes for whatever editing software you end up using.

The H1 + lav is much cheaper than a traditional wireless system I comes out sounding as good or better but you lose the ability to monitor audio. You'll have to figure out what's more important to you. As for the H1, I've always found the sound quality to be good, but they're a little big & plastic. For something to stick in a pocket & record PCM I prefer something like the Olympus DM-520 or 620. The built-in mics aren't as nice as the H1, but it's smaller & sturdier.

Just a heads up on the GHs for stills. The GHs are all a 2x crop factor. That means if you slap a standard 50mm lens on there it is going to act like it's a 100mm on a 35mm film camera. If you are shooting where there is some space, classroom, church, out doors etc, you are in good shape and the GH2 will work well. Where I ran into issues was shooting in my home and here I was stuck to a 20mm or less to be able to shoot head to toe and still be in the same room as the subject. As am example, exact same 50mm lens, same tripod location etc, only difference was 2X crop Panny and a 1.5X crop Nikon. Opposing wall was about 18' away to give you some idea of the crop differences.

PS....the GHs will kick the Nikon's butt when it comes to video.

If you don't want to do the "wired-lav-plugged-into-a-portable-recorder" thing and you're in need of a wireless system, you really shouldn't go for anything less than a Sennheiser EW112-p G3 system ($599). The Sony UWP-V1 is also decent ($450), but the lav mic that comes with the kit doesn't sound as nice as the one that comes with the Sennheiser.

I have the older version of this Sony wireless & it's a solid piece of gear for the money. I'd test the kit mic to see if it works for your purposes before dropping $200-$400 on a really good lav (Countryman B3/B6, Tram TR-50, Sanken COS-11).
