FS7: December contemplation, Sony 18-105 vs Sigma 18-55

December, time for some contemplation.

I bought this Sigma 18-55 F1.8 lens to replace the Sony 18-105 F4. But each time I want to use the Sigma I end up using the Sony 18-105. The distortion of the 18-105 is easy to fix in post.

Though the Sigma with sigma adapter is a nice lens, somehow I got attached to the cheap sony zoom.

For everyday actuality, when you need reliable, pin sharp images, manual zoom and focus controls with nice big lens rotation, just like the good old days?

Neither.

Get the 18-110.

Is there a Sigma 18-55 f1.8 or are you thinking of the 18-35?
The 18-35 is a great lens but of course it's only a wide angle.

You are right I mean Sigma 18-35 and yes it is wide, but I use the 18-105 mostly as a wide lens.

18-105
The range is great.
The autofocus is decent.
The IQ is OK.
The f4 speed is meh.
The complete inability to reliably manually focus the thing is maddening.

Sigma 18-35
The IQ is fantastic
The f1.8 speed is marvelous
The manual focus function is smooove
The zoom range is limiting
The AF is non-existent

I have them both and won’t sell either any time soon.

Oh man. I remember the first time I tried to manually focus the 18-105. I thought I was terrible at manual focus for a few minutes till I realized it was the lens.

The Sigma 18-35 is pretty great. The focus throw is really short. Especially when you get out beyond 10 feet or so, but it's gorgeous. I used the Sigma 18-35 and the Sigma 50-100 on my FS5 for a long time with the MC-11.
